Context

The British Red Cross helps people in crisis, whoever they are and wherever they are. We are part of a global voluntary network, responding to conflicts, natural disasters and individual emergencies.

We enable vulnerable people in the UK and abroad to prepare for, withstand and recover from emergencies in their own communities.

Scope

This is initially a full time position to cover maternity leave for a period of six months. You will be taking a lead role in the delivery of School and Community based work.

Overall purpose of the role

To play a key role within the young carers team to contribute to ensuring high standards in all aspects of delivery of service contract targets.

To deliver the Big Lottery and Local Authority targets


Main responsibilities and duties

1  To work with the Service Manager –Young Carers, to manage, develop, monitor and review all Young Carers work within Shropshire and ensure that area plans and targets are achieved.

2  To follow policies and protocols for the development and delivery of services consistent with the strategic direction for working with children and young people.

3  To work with the Service Manager – Young Carers to support the application of funding bids as required.

4  To ensure that any allocated budget/funding is properly managed.

5  To recruit, manage, develop and support volunteers (including interns and placements) to deliver activities and projects in Young Carers, schools and other organisations that work with children and young people.

6  To liaise with other Service Managers within Shropshire to ensure that there is a joined up first aid and humanitarian education offer to schools etc. where possible.

7  To deliver Young Carers sessions within schools in a co ordinated way.

8  To maintain records of activity levels with young carers within Shropshire. In line with BRC policies and provide management information as required (including monthly activity reports).

9  To ensure that relevant legislation, including Safeguarding /Child Protection and Health & Safety regulations are complied with.

10  Develop and maintain positive relationships with external organisations (e.g. Global Learning Networks, Youth and Community Area networks etc) where relevant to assist the Area Management Team/SSM to maximize opportunities for the service.

11  Where applicable offer support to young people engaged in wider activities and support to other service teams.

12  To uphold the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement and to work within the Society’s Equal Opportunities policy.

13  To undertake any other duties as requested by the Service Manager or Senior Service Manager.

14  To co-ordinate services for young carers and their families in the designated geographical area and develop outreach work within the community i.e. linking with schools and health professionals

15  Facilitate young carers peer support groups including preparation and supervision an all associated tasks e.g. risk assessment, session planning, evaluation etc.

16  Monitor the evaluation of service quality including user feedback

17  To develop services for young carers and their families by providing support, leadership and motivation to the volunteers

18  To publicise the work of the young carers project to appropriate agencies and the general public to generate partnerships and links with stakeholders
