1Introduction

This document establishes the policy for publications (articles, conference proceedings, etc.) and communications (talks, posters, press releases, etc.) prepared by members of the RBSP-ECT team. The official definition of the RBSP-ECT team membership is defined below in Section 2. This unified policy allows the team to:

  • Maintain the quality of early and critical RBSP-ECT publications by ensuing consultation with members of the team who are familiar with the operation of the instrument, subtleties in the instrument response, and any potential pitfalls;
  • Acknowledge the work put into the design and development of the RBSP-ECT instrument to produce the capable and calibrated instrument now available for science;
  • Coordinate the efforts across the team to avoid duplication of effort and maximize science return.

2The RBSP-ECT Team Members

Membership in the RBSP-ECT team is defined based on contributions to the original RBSP-ECT flight proposal and to the design, construction, calibration of the instrument and the data processing pipeline used to produce science quality data and analysis methods. We have divided the team into a “Core” group that had hands-on involvement in the proposal that made this project possible and the hardware and simulation efforts used in that process. A second group is “Significant contributors”. The final group of “Scientists” may not have worked on the instrument itself but either enabled development of the instrument or are conducting early scientific studies with RBSP-ECT data.

3Publications

If you are planning a publication as part of the RBSP-ECT team, you agree to follow these steps:

  • Include at least all members of the core RBSP-ECT team on the authorship list (the first column on the left of the table in Section 2) and any Significant Contributors and Scientists who significantly contributed to the specific work described in your publication.
  • Allow any members of the author list to request to remove their name from the publication authorship list as they so choose.
  • Notify the RBSP-ECT team that you are working on a paper and the topic of the paper well before circulating a first draft.
  • Circulate a copy to all co-authors at least two weeks before you intend to submit and be willing to wait on submission if there are concerns raised by a member of the core team.

Acknowledgements

In order for refereed publications to count toward RBSP-ECT’s totals, please make sure to include the following sentence in the acknowledgements section of every ECT-supported publication:

“This work was supported by RBSP-ECT funding provided byJHU/APL Contract No. 967399 under NASA’s Prime Contract No. NAS5-01072.”

4Communications

4.1Talks and Posters

For talks, include a slide showing names of the RBSP-ECT team. For abstracts and posters, if there is only space for a single author then you can just say “On behalf of the RBSP-ECT team”.

If you are presenting a new result, make sure to communicate your plans with the team in case there is a press release or other embargo in effect.

4.2Press Releases

RBSP-ECT press releases will follow the RBSP press release guidelines covered in the RBSP “Rules of the Road” and all RBSP-ECT team members are expected to abide by them.
