The goal for this unit is for students to learn about Lincoln’s early years through book reading, Power Point, games, writing and class discussion. The students will be able to recall facts about Lincoln and also compare them to current day experiences.

·  observe, examine, and discuss primary source material of Abraham Lincoln’s early life before his presidency.
·  use primary resources to learn more about Abraham Lincoln in his early years and how they affected him as a leader

Day One: As a class, complete a KWL chart on Abraham Lincoln. Read If You Grew Up with Abraham Lincoln by Ann McGovern. Discuss the events and artifacts in the years leading up to his presidency. Compare and contrast with a Venn Diagram his life to the lives of the students.
Day Two: Read A Picture Book of Abraham Lincoln, by David Adler. Continue discussion of Lincoln’s early life and complete book at this site:

Day Three: Read Abe Lincoln’s Hat by Martha Brenner and Donald Cook. Review facts previously learned and discuss new facts learned through the text. View and discuss PowerPoint at Abraham Lincoln.ppt. Students may play a Lincoln game that is linked to the end of the PowerPoint.
Day Four: Students participate in Abraham Lincoln game Abraham Lincoln game Hold a class discussion on how these artifacts affected Lincoln and his presidency.

Students complete the prompt for the class book. Teachers will use the provided rubric for evaluating each child’s page of the book.
