RBHS Wireless Documentation for Windows XP

Core Systems and Technologies

The following documentation will provide instructions for configuring the Microsoft Windows XP integrated wireless client. The integrated client is available on all Windows XP with Service Pack 2 systems.

To start the configuration process we need to browse to the Network Connections on the local machine. Browsing to this location can be achieved several different ways; for the purpose of this document we will utilize Start/Run. Click on the Start Menu and click Run. Once run has been selected a box should appear, in the box next to Open: type control panel, and select ok. This should open the control panel for the local system; locate the icon that says Network Connections and double-click. This will open the following screen. (Figure 1)

Figure 1.

Locate the Wireless Network connection for the local system. To access the properties of the wireless connection, right click on the appropriate icon and select properties, below is what should be displayed on the screen. (Figure 2)

Figure 2

Once at this screen scroll down and highlight Internet Protocol and click on properties.

Figure 3

Figure 3 shows the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties. As shown Obtain an IP address automatically, and Obtain DNS server address automatically are selected. After clicking ok the box will close.

Figure 4

Here is where to configure the wireless network settings to access the UMDNJ network. The screen in Figure 4 is accessed by selecting the Wireless Networks tab from the Wireless Network Connection Properties. (Note: If the Wireless Networks tab is not available on your system please see Appendix A) The settings should be set as follows: The box should be checked next to the text: Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings. Now to add the UMDNJ wireless settings to the Preferred networks section.

Figures 5 through 8 are screen shots of what settings need to be configured for proper addition of the UMD-WIFI-R profile. To get to Figure 5, click on Add in the Preferred networks section of Figure 4.

Figure 5

Figure 5 displays the network association information and should be configured with the following setting:

Network Name/SSID: UMD-WIFI-R (Must be in CAPS)

Network Authentication: Open

Data encryption: WEP

The key is provided automatically

Figure 6

Figure 6 displays the authentication protocol configuration information and should be configured as follows:

Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network

EAP type: Protected EAP (PEAP)

Figure 7

Figure 7 displays the PEAP authentication protocol properties, as well as the available authentication method. To access this box simply select the Properties button on Figure 6. For the UMDNJ Network the settings should be set as follows:

Select Validate server certificate

Select Authentication Method: set this to Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)

Enable Fast Reconnect is not necessary

Figure 8

Figure 8 is fairly important for all users. This screen is populated by clicking the Configure button in the Select Authentication Method in Figure 7. The box should not be checked. The reason for this is as follows, if the device is part of a domain or requires the user to supply credentials for access, then the credentials that were provided at time of login would be the same credentials passed along to the network for authentication. Since the credentials would be from their local windows account or their companies domain account, the authentication would fail. Also by not selecting the check box, each time a new connection is established to the UMDNJ wireless network the user would be prompted to enter their UMDNJ Core account credentials. As seen in figure 9.

Before getting the prompt for entering credentials all the changes that have been changed must be saved. To do this, simply click ok on each of the previous properties pages starting at figure 8 and working back. Once the screen in figure 2 is closed, all the setting changes that have been made are now saved. The system will reset the adapter, and a similar screen to what is seen in Figure 9 will appear.

Figure 9

Here the appropriate UMDNJ Core Account credentials are entered.

Figure 10

Upon establishing a connection to the wireless network and passing authentication a Validate Server Certificate screen should appear as seen in Figure 10. By clicking on View Server Certificate a screen similar to what is seen in Figure 11 should appear. The screen shows the details of the certificate that is issued when a secure connection has been established. By selecting OK on Figure 10 the trust relationship is established and the user is then connected to the wireless network.

Figure 11 below shows the server side certificate that establishes the secure wireless connection to the UMDNJ network. The certificate can be view by clicking the View Server Certificate button shown in Figure 10

Appendix A

The following section and screen shots will assist with enabling the Windows Wireless Zero Configuration setting. Enabling the Windows Wireless Zero Configuration service will allow for configuration of the wireless device through Windows. If the Wireless Zero Configuration service is disabled a screen like Figure A1 would be seen.

Figure A1

The Wireless Zero Configuration service can be enabled utilizing the following information. First, locate the My Computer icon for your system, the icon can be located either on the system Desktop or by clicking on the Start Menu. After locating the icon right click with the mouse and select Manage. By selecting manage Figure A2 will be populated as seen on the next page.

Figure A2

Now locate Services and Applications and left click on the + to expand the menu. Left click on services, this will populate a list of services installed on the local system. (See Figure A3)

Figure A3

Locate the Wireless Zero Configuration service by scrolling down. As seen in Figure A3 the service is set to Disabled. Now highlight the line by left clicking it. To enable the service and have it start automatically, right click on the highlighted line and select properties. By selecting properties, a screen should be populated as seen in Figure A4.

Figure A4

To enable the service, locate the Startup type dropdown menu and select Automatic. This will enable and start the Wireless Zero Configuration each time Windows Boots. Since the service was originally disabled and not running on startup the service needs to be started. After the service has been set to automatic the Start button located below the Startup type drop down menu is activated. (See Figure A5)

Figure A5

Figure A6

Click start to run the service. A box should appear similar to Figure A6 while Windows attempts to start the service. If the service starts successfully the box will close without any action required by the user.

Figure A7

Now that the service has been started, the Service Status will show as started. This can be seen in Figure A7. Since the Wireless Zero Configuration service has been started, configuration of the wireless adapter could be completed. To verify that starting the service has been successful, click ok to close the Wireless Zero Configuration Properties screen as well as the Computer Management screen. Refer to Figure 2 above and verify that the Wireless tab is available for selection. If the Wireless tab is available then follow the configuration instructions from that point forward to configure the wireless device for the UMDNJ Wireless network.
