February 2017

PRINCIPAL PONDERINGS

While it seems that the weather is ever changing in our area, it’s no more capricious than the daily headlines. Local, state, and national news is wrought with conflict over ideals, philosophies, principles. Our first amendment right to free speech has been fervently exercised in marches, blogs, and endless commentaries. There seems to be a lot of hand wringing and head shaking. I have been thinking lately of a book and video series that Francis Schaeffer authored in the 1970’s, How Should We Then Live? The Rise and Decline of Western Thought and Culture. Schaeffer examined how society had devolved to its current juncture and contemplated the Christian’s response. Not unlike Peter. In eight short chapters found in two letters, Peter wrote to persecuted believers living some 30 short years after the resurrection of Christ. He encouraged them to abstain from fleshly lusts, submit to God, cast their cares upon Him, exhibit honorable conduct, love the brotherhood, fear God, serve and suffer for God’s glory, resist the Devil, be vigilant, sanctify the Lord God in their hearts, be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks a reason for the hope that is in them. Age old cultural conflict, ageless biblical answers for How Should We then Live?Amazed by His Grace – Julie Hewitt
