Random Drug Testing - Revised 9-8-11

  1. Drug Testing

Students who choose to participate in an extracurricular activity and those who are granted on-campus parking privileges at Lake Zurich High Schoolare subject toExtracurricular/Parkers Drug Testing Program. Students are eligible for random selection for one calendar year from the start of the extracurricular activity in which they participate.

1.If a student fails to be drug testedwhen required or refuses to produce a specimen this will be judged as a positive test and will also be considered a violation of this policy.

2.Upon confirmation of a positive drug test result, and there is not a satisfactory explanation for the positive results, the student will have two attendance days to schedule a meeting with the SAP Coordinator.

  1. Intervention Steps:

1st Offense

The student will be suspended from participating in all meetings, practices, competition or performances for 50% of the total season/academic year or performances. Coaches/sponsors will have the discretion to allow students to practice with the team if the suspension will be over before the end of the season/activity. If less than 50% of the total season/academic year remains, the student will serve his/her consequence during his/her next season/academic year. The student and parents/guardian must confer with the SAP Coordinator, Principal, Athletic Director or Assistant Principal for Activities/Facilities. As an alternative to reduce the suspension to 25% of the total season,the student and his/her parents/guardian need to schedule an appointment with the SAP Coordinator and follow all recommendations. If fewer than 25% of the total season remains, the student will serve his/her consequence during his/her next season/academic year. Recommendations may include but are not limited to:

  1. Student to complete a drug/alcohol assessment by an alcohol and other drug counselor (CADC) licensed by the state of Illinois.
  2. Participation in Lake Zurich High School alcohol and drug education program Pathways or a similar program sponsored by an alcohol and drug treatment facility.
  3. Follow an individually developed program plan approved by SAP Coordinator and shared with the Principal, Athletic Director and/or Assistant Principal for Activities/Facilities.

2nd Offense and Subsequent Offenses

The student will be suspended from participating in all meetings, practices, competition or performances for one full season/academic year or performances. The student and parents/guardian must confer with the SAP Coordinator, Principal, Athletic Director or Assistant Principal for Activities/Facilities. As an alternative to possibly reduce the suspension to 50% of the season/academic yearthe student and his/her parents/guardian need to schedule an appointment with the SAP Coordinator and follow all recommendations. Coaches/sponsors will have the discretion to allow students to practice with the team if the suspension will be over before the end of the season/activity. If less than 50% of the total season/academic year remains, the student will serve his/her consequence during his/her next season/academic year. Recommendations may include but are not limited to:

  1. Student to complete a drug/alcohol assessment by an alcohol and other drug counselor (CADC) licensed by the state of Illinois.Any student who tests positive on a drug test will be required to submit to random drug testing for up to one year. Failure to comply will result in the loss of athletic eligibility and a meeting with the Principal, Athletic Director or Assistant Principal for Activities/Facilitieswill be required in order to discuss steps needed for reinstatement.
  2. Follow an individually developed program plan approved by SAP Coordinator and shared with the Principal, AthleticDirector or Assistant Principal for Activities/Facilities.
  1. General

1.Failure to complete any agreed to interventions will result in the reinstatement of the full suspension.

2.Student suspension percentages from practices, competition or performances will be rounded up to whole games/events.

3.Students involved in multiple sports and clubs during the same season/semester that receive a suspension will have all activities affected concurrently.

4.Nothing contained in this extracurricular code shall prohibit or limit the application of the District’s regular student disciplinary rules and regulations and are considered an addition to all other rules and regulations governing student conduct and discipline.

5.Coaches will have the discretion to allow students to practice with the team if the suspension will be over before the end of the season/activity.

  1. Voluntary Admission

The purpose of self-reporting is to allow students to be honest, to tell the truth when they make mistakes, but most importantly to get them the help they may need. To be considered a voluntary admission, a student must come to the SAP Coordinator, Athletic Director or Activity Director to turn himself/herself in for a violation of the Extracurricular/Parkers Drug Testing Program.

1.Admission must occur prior to any school personnel or law enforcement agency being aware of or becoming aware of the incident. A student cannot admit an incident for avoidance of a consequence and specifically may not admit to drug use upon receipt of notification for drug testing.

2.Voluntary admission may be used before a first or second violation but may be used only one time in the student’s entire high school career.

3.Admission before a first violation will result in no suspension and admission before a second violation will result in 35% suspension with no chance for reduction.

4.The student and his/her parents/guardian will be required to schedule an appointment with the SAP Coordinator and adhere to the recommendations made by the Coordinator.

  1. Due Process

1.The student and/or his/her parents/guardian will be advised by the SAP Coordinator, Principal, Athletic Director and/or Assistant Principal for Activities/Facilitiesof the concerns as the result of the student violation.

2.The student and his/her parents/guardian will be given the opportunity to discuss the situation with the SAP Coordinator, Principal, Athletic Director and/orAssistant Principal for Activities/Facilities.

3.The student and his/her parents/guardian will be advised by the SAP Coordinator, Principal, Athletic Director and/orAssistant Principal for Activities/Facilities of any disciplinary action to be taken as a result of the violation.
