A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY ON SNAYU SHAREERA W.S.R. TO SUSHIRA SNAYU AND THEIR APPLIED ANATOMY

6) BRIEF RESUME OF INTENDED STUDY

6.1) Need For The Study

In Ayurvedic classics, anatomical description of shareera is a subject which needs a lot of research. There is still a great lacuna in interpreting anatomical terms referred to in the classics. One of such term is snayu. There are a lot of different opinions regarding the concept of snayu, its classification and numerical tallying on the basis of modern human anatomy.

The Sanskrit word snayu means to bind2. As we read through our classics, snayu has been explained as mostly probably resembling a fibrous structure. According to Sushruta Samhita, snayu is a structure which binds joints and enables the body to bear weight4. Sarngadhara Samhita also quotes on snayu as a structure which binds the body by binding mamsa, asthi, and medas3.

Snayu is said to be the upadhatu of medas by Acharya Agnivesa1. Its mulasthana is said to be mastulunga according to Kashyapa Samhita7. Mastulunga has been explained as a type of medas by Vagbhata6 as in Ashtanga Sangraha.

A total of 900 snayus have been explained in the classical texts1, 4, 5. Snayu is classified into four types by Acharya Sushruta4 and Acharya Charaka1. They are Prathanavati, Vritha, Sushira, and Prithu. Pratanavati snayus are found in all shakhas and sandhis. Experts consider Vritta snayu as kandara. Sushira snayu is found at the distal ends of amashaya, pakwasaya, and vasthi. Prithu snayus are found in parshwa, uras, prishta, and siras.

Understanding the above four types of snayu still needs to be studied in depth. Hence to understand the concept of snayu and to evaluate anatomical structures which are related to the sushira snayu, the above study has been selected.

6.2) Review Of The Literature

·  Description of snayu mentioned in Ayurvedic classics.

·  Regional and applied anatomy explained in the modern texts shall be taken as supportive data.

7.1) Source Of Data

·  Literary and conceptual data from the Brihatrayees, Laghuthrayees, other classical books, journals, presented papers and internet.

·  Cadaveric dissection which will be carried over in the department of Rachana Shareera, Alva's Ayurveda Medical College, Moodbidri.

7.2) Method Of Collection Of Data.

·  Books, journals published, presented papers, informations through internet will be collected.

·  Dissection of cadaver will be performed in Department of Rachana Shareera, Alva's Ayurveda Medical College, Moodbidri, and relevant data will be collected.

Design Of Study

·  Literary and conceptual data collected from the above mentioned sources will be analyzed.

·  The preferable cadavers, minimum 3 in number will be selected for dissection. Observations on dissection will be compared and analyzed on basis of literary and conceptual data collected.

Inclusion Criteria

Structurally well prepared and preserved cadaver.

Exclusion Criteria

Cadaver with anomalies.

Assessment Criteria

Observation of regional anatomy on cadaver dissection and co-related with snayu explained in Ayurvedic classics.

7.3) Does The Study Require Any Investigations Or Interventions To Be Conducted On Patients (or) other Animals? If So Describe Briefly:

·  No, as the study is conducted on cadaver.

·  No clinical and animal experimental study will be conducted.
