6] BRIEF RESUMPTION OF THE INTENTED WORK:
6.1.] NEED FOR THE STUDY
Marma is defined as vital centre of the body, the region which has mamsa, sira, snayu,
asthi,sandhi sannipata
Acharyas have explained 107 marmas and further these are classified into five varieties on the basis of structure involved, effect of injury and according to their location. Sadhyapranahara marma falls under the classification on the basis of effect of injury, which on injury leads to death in seven days. Totally 19 Sadhyapranahara marmas are explained by Acharyas. They are (i) Shringhataka-4; (ii) Adhipathi-1, (iii) Shankha-2; (iv) KantaSira-8; (v) Guda-1; (vi) Nabhi-1, (vii) Hridaya-1; (viii) Vasti-1. Shankha marma is one of the important Sadhyapranahara marma which is urdhwajatru gatha asthi marma.
The present work has been taken up with the idea of updating early concept of Sadhyapranahara marma in view of modern applied and regional anatomy through cadaver dissection and conceptual study , there by to emphasize on why Acharyas had considered these 19 marmas as Sadhyapranahara w.s.r to Shankha marma.
6.2] REVIEW OF LITERATURE
® Acharya Sushrutha gave much importance to marma, he explained detail description on marma, their types, numbers, locations and the viddha lakshanas if they are injured, in sareerastana 6th chapter1.
® Detail description of marma is available in both Ashtanga Hridaya (Sareera stana 4th Chapter)2 and Ashtanga Sangraha (Sareera stana 7th Chapter)3.
® Acharya Charaka explanined Tri marmas in detail after mentioning the total number of marmas as 1074.He emphasized the importance of Shankha marma by including it in Dasha pranayatana5.
® Detail description of the anatomical structures related to the region of marma can be placed in various modern anatomy text books.6,7,8
