RAF Programme Frequently Asked Questions for Focal Points
Why are we looking for focal points?
By designating focal points in local United Nations offices in the selected countries, the Programme Coordinator Mr. Zvi Muskal will be able to follow up with him or her directly and forward applications of eligible journalists for consideration. Also, interested journalists have a contact person who can assist with the various stages of the application process, as well as with follow-up. By nominating suitable candidates, UN offices also have the opportunity of strengthening their relationship with local media organizations and individuals.
How can the focal points help in the selection process?
There are many different ways in which the local focal points can support the Programme and help to ensure its success. For instance:
1. Post the relevant information on your website and link to the Programme Website: http://outreach.un.org/raf
2. Assist candidates in filling out the application form and submit the required documents.
We would request that the focal points help to identify up to four suitable candidates from their country (of which at least two should be women) and ensure that all relevant documentation is submitted to the Programme Coordinator no later than 8 March 2016.
What can the focal points do once the Programme has started and as follow-up actions?
1. Stay actively involved in the Programme by following us on our website and in social media.
2. Maintain contact with the journalist from your country while he/she is in New York.
3. Once he/she returns, add the journalist to your media distribution list and invite him/her to speak about his/her experiences of the Programme to colleagues and fellow journalists.
4. Provide assistance and information to the journalist as needed when writing stories or reporting on UN related issues.
5. Keep in mind the journalist when planning any relevant events.
What if no journalist from my country is included in the Programme in New York?
Every year, more countries are invited to participate in the Programme than we have slots available. This is to enable us to select a balanced and representative group of participants. Those countries which are not able to send a participant will be given priority in next year’s Programme. Also, even if there is no journalist from your country participating, we still offer the opportunity of participating remotely and provide documentation, as well as online access to interested parties.
What are your benefits assisting this Programme?
Focal points from previous years have appreciated this opportunity to strengthen their relationship with local media organizations and individual journalists. They have also found that participation in the Programme promotes a more balanced and accurate reporting on the United Nations in a proactive manner. The RAF Programme is also an opportunity to partner with the Department of Public Information in implementing a General Assembly mandated successful Programme.
