RACEWAYS & BOXES

PART 1GENERAL

1.1SECTION INCLUDES

  1. This Section includes basic materials and electrical methods for all Division 16, Electrical and related work.

PART 2PRODUCTS

2.1RIGID METAL CONDUIT

  1. Rigid metal conduit: hot dipped galvanized.
  2. Fittings: galvanized steel.

2.2ELECTRICAL METALLIC TUBING (EMT)

  1. Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT): Galvanized steel.
  2. (EMT) fittings: Of similar metal to the conduit they are used with. Only rolled steel, gland, rolled steel setscrew, and ring compression type is permitted. Non-ferrous, cast or pot metal type fittings are not acceptable.
  1. FLEXIBLE METAL CONDUIT
  2. Flexible metal conduit: made of galvanized steel, rounded, interlocking convolutions.
  3. Fittings: Straight or angle type, set screw, 2-screw or hinge type, malleable iron/ galvanized as manufactured by Steel City, T & B, Appleton.
  4. Liquid tight flexible metal conduit: Conform to NEC Article 350.
  5. Fittings: as manufactured by Midwest, Robroy, T & B, & Appleton.
  6. ALUMINUM CONDUIT: NOT PERMITTED
  7. IMC (INTERMEDIATE METAL CONDUIT): NOT PERMITTED
  8. BOXES AND ACCESSORIES
  9. Minimum size outlet box: 4 inches square by 1-1/2 inch deep, unless approved or indicated otherwise. For voice data systems refer to communication’s outlet detail.
  10. Use cast iron metal outlets with gasketed covers for all exterior and for all damp locations.
  11. Cast outlet boxes: threaded conduit entrances and gasketed covers.
  12. Aluminum type not permitted.
  13. Boxes: A minimum of two hubs on the bottom. Appleton or Crouse-Hinds.

PART 3EXECUTION

3.1RACEWAYS

  1. Use rigid metal conduit as follows unless noted otherwise: in the ground, in all slabs, outdoors, and for all panel feeders.
  2. Use EMT above ground in ceiling space, in walls. Not permitted in concrete.
  3. Use PVC underground, in duct banks, exposed when protected from physical damage and from sun exposures. PVC is not allowed above grade. PVC schedule 80 (UV resistant) shall be used above grade when exposed to chemical agents such aschiller yard cooling tower installations, and pump housesin compliance with NEC 110-11.
  4. For renovations surface mounted raceways may be allowed with approval from SBBC Design Services.
  1. MISCELLANEOUS
  2. Provide cable supports as indicated and in accordance with the drawings and NEC.
