Quilchena Elementary PAC Meeting Minutes

Wednesday, February 24th, 2016

Attendees: Jean Gross (Vice-Chair), Bonnie Chuter (Treasurer), Susan Tse (Secretary), Janet Powell (Principal), Kristina Lee, Lily Luong, Nicola Turton, Crystal Valdez

1.  Call to Order

·  Meeting called to order at 6:34 p.m.

2.  Welcome & Introductions

3.  Approval of the Minutes

·  MOTION: Jean moved that the minutes be adopted as written. Seconded by Nicola. All in favour. Carried.

4.  Adoption of the Agenda

·  MOTION: Nicola moved that the agenda be adopted as written. Seconded by Kristina. All in favour. Carried.

5.  Business Arising from Minutes (Old Business)

·  Bottle Drive – we collected 8,352 bottles/can and raised $600.91. Well done, everyone!

·  MOTION: Jane moved that we approve the 4 wish list items that have not yet been approved (hockey nets, garden funds, Reader’s Choice books, field trip subsidies). Seconded by Jaime. All in favour. Carried.

6.  Treasurer’s Report – Bonnie Chuter

·  See attachment.

·  Not much change this month – just got movie night receipts, so this is not up-to-date.

7.  Principal’s Report – Janet Powell

·  Cyclone Power Week

o  Monday – “Inside Out” – asked kids to pay attention to Rylie’s islands and then think about what “islands” they need themselves to feel happy and healthy. Next day, kids had to draw or sculpt their islands.

o  Tuesday – Jump Rope for Heart – we have made over $500 so far!

o  Wednesday – Building the Islands, Pink Shirt Day

o  Thursday – 2nd day of indoor games in family teams to help kids learn how to be good sports during games.

o  Friday – Assembly to share their work

·  School Closures – no new information – can expect a shortlist of schools that will be considered probably before spring break. After the list is public, there will be a public consultation. Then decision will be made by October. After spring break, we may know more about process.

·  Upcoming events:

o  Div. 1 – Science Jam on March 1

o  Wed. March 2 & Thurs. March 3 – Basketball Tournament

o  Car Seat Clinic is Friday; RCMP officer will check car seats and give tips to parents

o  Friday is Mr. Livingston’s last day before his leave; Ms. Sippi Lee will take over for the rest of the year.

o  March 4 – Bands will play

o  Spuds in tubs will be planted the week before spring break

o  Report cards go home on March 10

o  Spring break starts on March 11, return on Tuesday, March 29th

o  Class Photos – April 5th

o  Talent Show & Parent Tea – April 15

o  Track Attack starts 2nd week back after spring break

·  Biennale project – kids are looking at identity, place and time for themselves and their families; how did we come to be in this place and time together? There will be a project that the kids will come up with that will be installed in connection to the front area and/or garden with the idea that it will be revealed for our 40th anniversary.

·  29 Gr. 7s leaving; only 12 Ks registered. Have 6 divisions, could potentially bump up to 7 divisions if there’s an influx. Mr. Pantaleo is temporary and will be leaving at the end of the year.

·  So far, organization looks like: K/1, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 5/6, 6/7

·  April 8th is Staffing Meeting with Board Office – Janet will get told how many divisions we will organize for September

8.  Committee Reports & Correspondence

Food Days – Jane Cyr, Michelle Woo

·  Forms are going out next Tuesday – hot dogs and sushi

·  Future food days: March 10, Apr. 1, Apr 29, May 20, June 10

Food for Kids – Laura Rodgers

·  Added cheese in cupboard, otherwise, cupboard is stocked.

Fundraising – Jean Gross

·  Meat Sale – order forms out yesterday, due March 8th, orders to be picked up April 5th at 2:40 p.m.

·  Movie night – low turnout, but fun for those who attended

RDPA – Jane Cyr & Jamie Matheos

·  Food safe course this Saturday – RDPA subsidizes cost so will cost $50 – Jane will take the course and Crystal & Ron have valid certification as well

40th Anniversary Committee – Susan Tse

·  Committee met a couple weeks ago

o  2 banners purchased by Renee “Welcome to Quilchena, established 1975”

o  Prizes – 70s themed e.g. fortune fish, magic worms

o  Jen Barha – looking into getting tie-dyed shirts for volunteers

o  Need to make a rainy day plan

o  Assembly at 2:00, look at Biennale project; classes would open from 2:40 – 5:00; carnival would run from 3:00 – 5:30

o  Janet reported that a new school song will be unveiled that day

o  We have booked a balloon artist and 2 professional facepainters

o  There will be a central ticketing station for purchase of game tickets and for prizes

o  We will have a “selfie station” (photobooth with props)

o  Raffle baskets – Jean and Jen are asking companies for donations

o  Jane & Crystal will organize hot dogs, pizza and snacks for the event

9.  New Business

·  First Nations Welcome for 40th Anniversary assembly – Roberta Price - $150 – asking if PAC is willing to pay half. Members agreed to pay for whole cost. Will include this as part of our 40th Anniversary budget.

Next meeting: Wed. April 20th, 2016 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. in Mr. Vines’ room. West Richmond Community Centre Staff will be there to run Open Gym for the kids!
