Alka-Seltzer Lab

Question: How fast can we make the lid come off?

Variables we can change:

1.______4.______

2.______5.______

3.______6. ______

My factor to Test:______.

Hypothesis: If______, Then______Because ______

Constant Variables: We will control these variables by always keeping them at this value

Constant:
Amount for all tests

Warnings:

1.  Always wear safety goggles!!!!!!

2.  Never point the canister anywhere but the ceiling!!!!

3.  Horseplay is forbidden and will result in a zero and a phone call.

4.  Any time you perform your trials, call out a warning “heads up” so people can watch out for falling lids.

Procedure:

1.  Put ______water in film canister

2.  Place ______of Alka-Seltzer on lid

3.  On the count of 3, flip the lid closed on the canister and start the stopwatch

4.  Call “heads up”, stop timer when top blows off, retrieve lid, rinse out canister, and record data.

5.  Repeat for each of the four trials of your variable.

Amount for Trial 1:______Trial 2:_____ Trial 3: ______Trial 4:______

Miss Walker’s Approval:______

My Results: Enter your factor in the data table and draw a line graph on your graph paper showing how your factor increased or decreased the speed.

Trials / Time for lid to come off (secs)
Trial 1
Trial 2
Trial 3
Trial 4

Class Results: Enter the class results in the data table and draw a bar graph comparing the fastest time recorded for each factor.

Factor tested / Fastest time for lid to come off (sec)

Alka-Seltzer Analysis Questions

Answer each question in complete sentences.

1.  Identify the independent and the dependent variables in your experiment.

Independent variable:

Dependent variable:

2.  What procedures did you use in your experiment to make sure your constant variables were kept the same the whole time?

3.  Make a claim about how your factor influenced the speed of reaction. Ex. increasing heat increased speed. Use your line graph to help you answer this question, and give the evidence from your graph to support your claim
