Question 5 Hazards: End of Unit Test /25

For the following questions circle the correct letters.

05 – 1 In the context of hazards what is meant by the term adaptation. (1 mark)

A Adaptation is when local communities take responsibility for hazard management and planning. They drive the strategy to protect and manage the hazard without the influence of outside agencies.

B Adaptation is the attempts by people or communities to live with hazard events. By adjusting their living conditions, people are able to reduce their levels of vulnerability. They predict, prevent and protect. For example, they may avoid building on sities that are vulnerable to storm surges in the same area.

C Adaptation is the view that outcomes of any future hazards are beyond the control of the community or governments. An adaption strategy would always result in adandonment of the hazardous areas. For example in the event of sea level rise a population would move to higher ground.

D Adaptation is the view of a hazard that suggests that people cannot influence or shape the outcome, therefore nothing can be done to mitigate against it. People with such as attitude put in place limited or no preventative measures.

05 – 2 Identify the 3 pieces of geological evidence that were used to support Alfred Weneger’s theory of plate tectonics. (1 mark)

B The continents fit together like a jigsaw.

C Fossil remains in Indian Limestone are comparible to those found in similiar fossils in Australia.
