Question 7 (Worth 4 points)

We often call bacteria ‘germs’ and think of them as cells that makes us sick. Argue against this idea. Provide two ways in which bacteria are helpful.

Essay Submission

We wouldn't be able to live without bacteria because they are the ones that protect us from diseases. They break down the food in our digestive system, this way, we can get more nutrients of the food we eat.
Bacteria are very helpful in the production of food as well. An example would be yogurt and cheese. This is because without bacteria, the sugar in the yogurt wouldn't turn into lactic acid and wouldn't give it a better taste.

Question 8 (Worth 4 points)

Your doctor diagnoses you with Strep throat, and then prescribes you an antibiotic to take for 10 days. After 7 days, you feel much better and no longer show any symptoms. Is it ok to go ahead and stop taking the antibiotic? Explain your answer.

Essay Submission

No, because even though you are feeling better in the 7th day, not all bacteria must be destroyed yet by the antibiotics. There might still be some bacteria left and if you stop treating it, the bacteria might gain antibiotic resistance, which would make it stronger to the antibiotics and would cause the bacteria to get worse and possibly get another infection.
