JANUARY 20 DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION. THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS IS LIMITED TO 25, SO QUALIFIED APPLICANTS WILL BE CONSIDERED ON A FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED BASIS.

Participants will receive a $500 stipend distributed in two installments and $200 worth of materials on China, Japan and Korea. After teachers complete all aspects of the seminar, each participating school will receive an additional $300 of materials on China, Japan and Korea.

What is the purpose of the seminar?

The National Consortium for Teaching about Asia and the East Asian Curriculum Project of Columbia University have selected Arkansas as a site of a special seminar to be held this spring on China, Japan, and Korea, funded by the generosity of the Freeman Foundation. The seminar’s purpose is to increase World History, Geography, Literature and Art teachers’ knowledge of the histories and cultures of the three countries.

The 25 teachers selected for the seminar will each receive a $500 stipend distributed in two installments and $200 worth of materials on China, Japan and Korea. After teachers complete all aspects of the seminar, each participating school will receive an additional $300 worth of materials on China, Japan, and Korea.

Who is eligible?

First priority will be given to middle and high school World History, World Geography, World Literature, and World Art teachers.

What is required of seminar participants?

In order to receive stipends and materials, participants must complete all of the following:

  1. Participants will attend ten workshops on the following dates at the Northwest Arkansas Education Coop in Springdale from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon:

February 15March 1March 29 April 12May 3

February 22March 8 April 5 April 19 November 22

2. Participants must complete assigned readings in the East Asia text that will be provided to them.

  1. Participants will develop three classroom lessons and present them at the final November workshop.

4. Obtain a supervisor’s signature on the application form that if the participant returns to his or her

school in the fall of 2003 they will teach at least one section of World History, World Geography, World Art or World Literature.

Is there a chance to travel to Asia?

Yes. Alumni of the three years of the East Asia Seminar will have priority to travel to two of the three

countries (probably South Korea and Japan) in the summer of 2004, provided that the Freeman Foundation funds the trip.
