Setting the scene (5 mins)
Share the learning objective with the class. Explain to them that in this unit they are going to learn how to ask complex questions. Remind them of the work they have already done in Unit s 3c and 4d. Ask them if they can remember how to ask a database a simple question. Remind them of the database vocabulary – field, record.
Main Input (5 Mins)
Away from the computer
In this lesson the focus is on asking questions relating to numeric data. Show the class the symbols in the file conditions.doc and ask them if they can explain what they mean. Use the symbols and numbers to make number sentences simliar to 6 is greater than 4, 7 does not equal 9, 5 is less than 10.
At the computer
Show the children one record from the ourselves file. Ask them to identify which fields contain numeric data. Explain that we are going to learn how to search the database for children with a reach greater than 120 cm.
Click on the search icon and choose the reach field. Draw their attention to the list of conditions and spend some time matching the words to the symbol cards you used previously. Then show the class how to choose the apporpriate option and enter the values. Click start search to see the results.
Activity – short focused task (5 mins) integrated task (30 mins)
Give the children the question cards and ask them to find the answers in the database.
Review and recall (10 mins)
Bring the class together and review the learning objective. Ask them to show their answers to the questions and then ask one of them to demonstrate how they found their result.
Key questions to ask and to display:
What is numeric data?
