Q2.

This was aimed at Grade G. Candidates were required to match food vocabulary items with pictures, and most coped well. Revision of vocabulary in themed sections helps students to prepare effectively for such tasks.

Q3.

This question, targeted at G grade students, requiring the candidates to recognise single lexical items was answered fairly well although individual items of vocabulary did cause problems. Over half of entrants achieved the full four marks for question 1 with beurre most frequently an unknown item of vocabulary. A number of candidates incorrectly identified the sweets as sucre.

Q4.

Many candidates scored poorly in this question targeted at F grade. Just over half of entrants knew the meaning of the word cuir. Jouets and cabinesd'essayage also presented a problem to many students. Most candidates however were able to correctly identify bureau de change as a place where someone would change pounds into Euros. The skills required for this question were similar to question 2 but the vocabulary items in this question proved more problematic to candidates.

Q6.

Candidates needed to identify where in a shopping centre individuals could carry out various tasks. Most scored at least 3 out of 4. A good knowledge of basic vocabulary items is necessary to perform well in such an exercise, together with an element of deductive reasoning.

Q7.

In this question students were presented with a longer text about a family's shopping trip to Rouen. The multiple choice questions required them to demonstrate the ability to extract detailed information from the text, one of the more complex tasks demanded of them in this paper. Students can easily undertake similar exercises in their preparation for the examination.

Q8.

This was aimed at Grade C and was based on a longer text, an extract from a letter. Candidates had to demonstrate their comprehension of ideas in the text by selecting the correct completion of sentences from three possibilities. This was found to be more difficult than the previous questions. Practice at reading short authentic texts for gist helps students to develop their ability to cope well with such tasks.
