QUESTION 1

The Cricket World Cup is one of the world’s largest

and most viewed sporting events. The World Cup

has taken place every four years since 1975 until the

present.

1.1  Write the following bold figures in scientific notation (Round off to one

decimal place.)

(a) The Cricket World Cup is televised over 200 countries, with over

over two billion television viewers. (2)

(b) The 2007 World Cup matches were attended by 626 845 people. (2)

1.2  Calculate the following, leave answers in scientific notation. (Round off to

one decimal place.)

1.3  According to the Barbados Government’s budget for 2007, $23,45 million

of the total budget of $886,9 million was allocated to the World Cup. What

percentage of the total budget was allocated towards the Cricket Word Cup

1.4  Zinzi is a student who will be going to the Cricket World Cup 2011. She

goes shopping for the trip. The items illustrated below, are priced without

VAT(Value Added Tax). VAT is 14% in South Africa.

1.5  Desmond is a travel agent, who is advertising special travel packages to the

Desmond R19 740,00 per person sharing. What will the trip cost his clients,

per person sharing? (4)

Ferenz is an avid South African cricket supporter. He wants to buy a new 32” LCD

television and DVD/DIVX home theatre system from Govan Mani . The following

advertisement appears in the classified newspaper.

Equal monthly installments over 2½ years

2.1  What is the total amount Ferenz would pay for both items, if he makes a cash

purchase? (1)

2.2 Explain in your own words the term “Hire Purchase”. (2)

2.3 Ferenz does not have the cash available and has to purchase these two

items on Hire Purchase terms.

(a) Calculate the deposit Ferenz has to pay on Hire Purchase terms. (2)

(b) What is the total accumulated amount Ferenz needs to pay back

to Govan Mani, if he buys the two items on Hire Purchase? (5)

(c)  Calculate the monthly installments that Ferenz needs to pay on

these items. (3)

in 2007. These photographs are framed and sold. The small business that they

start together needed an initial investment. Jethro invests R2 700,00 and

Joseph invests R4 200,00.

4.1  They decided to divide the profit in the same ratio as their investments.

What is the ratio of their investments (in simplest form)? (3)

4.2  They make a profit of R3 400,00. How much profit will each partner

(Jethro and Joseph) make? (4)

the speed at which Ntini bowled the ball was recorded. The table below records the

ball speed (km/h) in the first two overs.

6.1 (a) What is the distance between the two wickets?.

6.2  Ntini bowls a ball that hits the wicket. The batsman is out! The ball hits

the bails (71,1 cm) above the ground. The distance the ball traveled from

when it left the ground to hitting the balls is 6 220 mm. At what distance

from the wickets did the ball hit the ground?

The Cricket World Cup 2007 Final was played in the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown,

Barbados, in the Caribbean.

Using the map below to answer the following questions.

(a) Write down the latitude and longitude co-ordinates of the Island

Barbados. (2)

(b) If the distance, as the crow flies, between Jamaica and St Kitt’s

Island measures 6 cm, on the map, calculate the actual distance

using the scale of the map (answer in Kilometres.) (4)

Answer the following questions below on a cricket stadium. A cricket

stadium is called an ‘Oval’ due to its unique shape. Use the diagram below

to help you answer the questions that follow.

Area of rectangle = length x breadth

Area of circle = π r2

(a) Calculate the area of the pitch. (2)

(b) Calculate the area of the grass only. (7)

The stadium has a capacity of 28 000 seats, Around the stadium the seating

is arranged in 8 blocks.

(a) In average, how many seats are there in one block? (2)

(b) If each row of seats in the stadium needs a height of 700 mm, how

many rows are there in each block, if the height of the stadium is

30 m? (4)

(c) On average, how many seats are there in each row? (3)

Cricketers need to train on a treadmill (a computerised running machine) for their

fitness program. The treadmill allows one to set the speed at which one runs.

Pollock is a cricketer and wants to now how long it will take him to run 10 Km on

a treadmill.

Distance = speed x time

8.1  Complete the following table:

8.6  At peak performance, Pollock need to be able to finish 10 Km in 38 minutes.

in the graph below.

9.2  What is the difference in attendance between males and females in

9.3  Discuss the trend of the graph according to attendance of all spectators,

males and females from 1975 until present. Include possible reasons

for this trend. (3)

9.4 Between which years was the greatest increase in female supporters? (2)

9.5 Calculate approximately, the percentage increase of all the spectators

from 1975 to 2007. (5)

Darren is a tuck shop owner at a South African cricket stadium. He sells different

types of foods and drinks to the spectators. The most popular drink is Coca-Cola.

He buys a crate of cans from the supplier at R167,15. A crate contains 54 cans.

In two hours, Darren is able to sell 671 cans.

10.1  He sells each can for R4,50. How much profit does Darren make on

each can? (5)

10.2 What is the percentage profit that he makes? (3)

10.3 How many crates will he need if a cricket match lasts on average

8 hours? (4)

paid for, except pocket money. You need to borrow R5 000,00. You must

repay the loan (plus interest) over a period of 24 months. The following two

offers are available to you:

Option 1: 5% simple interest calculated annually.

Option 2: 4,5% compound interest compounded annually.
