1. Describe the Native American tribal presence in the state of Washington today? In Washington, where do you find the smallest and the largest tracts of contiguous land area still owned by a tribe or confederation of tribes? Speculate why you think there is this pattern of tribal land ownership.

2. Compare and contrast how the environment of the Coastal Tribes and the Plateau (interior) Tribes resulted in such different lifestyles? (NOTE: What was their primary food and where did they get their food, how did they get along with other tribes, what kind of houses did they built, were they active in the arts?) As part of this answer, describe the environment that was the home for each group, e.g., forests, grasslands, deserts, etc.

3. In the class reading “Native American Influences on the Development of Forest Ecosystems”, four different activities were summarized to support the idea that Native Americans were not nomadic or passive occupants of the lands in North America. List one of activities and describe why it supports Native Americans not being passive occupants of their lands?

4. Compare Native American art and the items that they made for day to day use. Depending on how you answered this question, what does it tell you about Native American approach to art? Why do you think How does this differ from the western European approach to art and day to day items?

6. It is common knowledge that Native Americans used fire to manage their landscapes. How do we know that this really happened? Why was fire used by Native Americans?

7. Did North America have high ungulate populations (especially ungulates like elk, moose, bison, and Alaska grizzly bears) before the arrival of the Europeans? In the article “Native American Influences on the Development of Forest Ecosystems”, what evidence was provided to support the size of the ungulate populations prior to the arrival of the Europeans?

8. Did Native Americans manage beavers and what evidence explains your answer? What has been a repercussion of losing beavers in the Yellowstone national Park?

9. What was the role of the buffalo in the life of Native Americans living in the Great Plains region of the US? What was the US government policy towards the buffalo and what was a repercussion of this policy?

10. Speculate why you think culture and cultural resources are important for Native American tribes?
