ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES FOR

TRADITIONAL, RECREATIONAL DANCE

Requirements for Meets Expectations of Class or “C” Grade.

  • Daily dressing for dance (2 points)
  • Participating in warm-ups (3 points)
  • Completing dance assignment for the day (5 points)

For the sake of a simplified accounting system, students will receive class credit for holidays and classes missed for school wide activities. Each week will be worth 50 points and 50 points earned weekly will maintain a “C” grade.

Requirements for Excels in Class or “B” Grade.

  • Earning the points needed for a “C”.
  • Averaging 10 points, per week, above and beyond a “C” average.

Written or dance exams given on a regular basis will provide the opportunity for students to earn an average of at least 10 points of extra credit per week in class. These exams will be based on information presented about the individual dances and cultures they represent. Exams cannot subtract points from a student’s point total; they can only add points to a student’s accumulated score.

Requirements for Exceeds Expectations of Class or “A” Grade.

  • Earning the points needed for a “B” (averaging 10 points a week above a “C”).
  • Averaging 10 points, per week, above and beyond the “B” average, earned through the completion of outside learning activities.

Outside learning activities fall into a wide variety of categories. For a complete description of these opportunities please see the “Outside Credit Possibilities” sheet provided or find the information under “Dance Homework” on Mr. Burke’s Millikan Web page.

Absences

Whenever a student is not in dance class, for any reason, they are responsible for making up the dance activity credit (5 points per day). Any outside credit listed on the “Outside Credit Possibilities” sheet can fulfill this requirement. Assignments may be turned in up to the day before grades must be submitted. If the reason for absence is a school field trip the student can receive the 5 points of dance credit by completing the information asked for on the “Field Trip credit Slip”.

Student Status

Point totals will be posted regularly. Letter grades,

Work Habits and Cooperation grades will also be listed.

Work Habits

Students must be in their place on the dance floor, ready to begin class, at the tardy bell. Tardies will lower a student’s grade in Work Habits.

Students are to come to class with the required materials. Daily this includes proper dancewear, including shoes. On written test days students must also have a number two pencil. On lecture days a student must have a notebook dedicated to dance. All written exams are “open notebook”. Coming unprepared for class will lower a student’s grade in Work Habits.

Cooperation

Dance class rules concerning participation, deportment and courtesy will be inforced on a daily basis. These include: actively participating in class activities; listening quietly to instruction; following rules concerning gum, food and drink restrictions and maintaining dressing rooms in acceptable condition.

Clearing Negative Marks

(tardies, non-dress days, food or gum in class).

Students may clear negative marks (tardies, non-dresses, classroom rule infractions) through Community Service credit. This credit comes in the form of “15 minutes of

Service” for any adult on staff at Millikan Middle School. Service may be earned by helping a teacher, office worker, administrative staff member, safety officer, or custodial staff member. This service must be done on the student’s time, that is, before or after school, nutrition or lunch. Forms for this service are available from Mr. Burke or on the “Dance Documents” file on Mr. Burke’s web page. No more than one hour (four credits) may be served for any one staff member.
