Location: Culzean Castle & Country Park , Maybole Ayrshire , KA19 8 LE / Type of Contract: Permanent/ Full-time 40 hours per week

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

To lead the Culzean Castle & Country Park stonemasonry service and provide stonemasonry work to the highest standard. The post holder will train apprentices to enable them to go on to provide stonemasonry work to the highest standards and provide ongoing advice and guidance to Trust staff and external bodies/ groups on relative conservation matters.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

·  In collaboration with the Operations Manager and other relevant Trust staff develop the function of the workshop and guide its direction with particular regard to training arrangements and the scope of work it is able to undertake

·  To monitor and control work output and occasionally control external contractors.

·  Undertake the induction, supervision and training of stonemasonry apprentices and occasionally intern and placements in all aspects of the craft

·  Develop and keep under review appropriate conservation stonemasonry training syllabus; lead apprentices through the syllabus, monitor and manage their performance.

·  Undertake induction and training of other staff members in order to increase their understanding of the purpose of the stonemasonry workshop and the craft of stonemasonry

·  Carry out surveys and preparing working drawings of stonemasonry work to be undertaken, scheduling and handling ordering and receiving of stone

·  Prepare tooling and carving of stone as required by the Trust using a wide variety of stonemasonry techniques to a variety of materials

·  Record and dismantle existing structures, move fix and build new stone in repairs, alteration and new work

·  Research original construction materials and techniques and interpret these to produce accurate conservation work to the highest standard set by the Trust and other external bodies including historic Scotland

·  Preparing applying and curing a variety of lime mortars, harls and limewashes necessary.

·  Efficient management of the apprentices and Stonemason to expedite construction work

·  Day to day running of the workshop, plant and equipment and vehicles, including cleaning, tool maintenance, PPE maintenance, Reviewing and maintaining adequate stocks of materials and equipment

·  Preparing priced and/or timed work schedules and proposals and managing output in order to plan and carry out work to budget

·  Development of workshop activities in order to reduce call on trust funds to support the stonemasonry department

·  Prepare and manage an annual revenue budget for the workshop. Monitor budget and prepare regular reports on progress

·  To promote the aims and objectives of the stonemasonry team, conservation stonemasonry and the Trust. This might be achieved through external lecturing on trust activities and projects, contributing and participating in conservation issues in the wider conservation community and contributing to or writing articles on trust projects for internal and wider circulation

·  Identify and take part in opportunities for the stonemasonry team to engage with the general public and interpret the work of the stonemasons.

·  To ensure that all work undertaken by the workshop comply with current health & safety procedures and legislation

·  Contribute to and carry out risk assessments, COSHH assessments and method statements for the safety of Stonemasons, other staff, contractors and the public.

·  Co-operate and working with other Culzean and wider Trust staff, external contractors and consultants to develop and improve health and safety working practices within the stonemasons remit

·  Maintain and manage information and files relating to day to day running of the workshop and projects; including project documents and drawings

·  Recording of existing structures and ‘as-built’ work in order to maintain an accurate archive of work carried out to historic structures

·  Manage and monitor performance of apprentices and fulltime staff through periodic reviews

·  Take a leading role in the development of a new strategy to establish the workshops future direction.

As this role (as part of normal day-to-day duties) will directly supervise and care for, and/or manage others who supervise and care for children or vulnerable adults as guests at functions or in overnight settings the Trust requires the post holder to become a member of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme, which replaces the ‘Enhanced Disclosure’ check and is administered by Disclosure Scotland.

SCOPE OF ROLE

People Management

·  The post holder is directly responsible for the overall day to day management of the stonemasonry team comprising of apprentices and one other qualified stonemason.

·  The Head Stonemason is directly managed by the Operations Manager with relevant input from other hey Trust departments.

·  The Head Stonemason liaises with external organizations to achieve ongoing objectives including external consultants, the CITB (Industry training board and City of Glasgow College to successfully deliver the apprentice training programme.

Financial Management

·  The post holder is responsible for managing the stonemasonry team annual budget with the Operations Manager and monitoring expenditure, as well as delivering specific capital projects and maintenance activities against a budget.

·  Through the strategy the Head Stonemason will help to gain financial support for the stonemasonry apprenticeship programme and the ongoing improvements to the infrastructure of the workshop

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE

The above outlines the key skills the job holder will need to possess and exercise. In addition, either knowledge of or experience in the following is required:

·  City and Guilds/ SVQ/ NVQ/ advanced stonemasonry qualification

·  Comprehensive demonstrable practice and planned framework

·  Sound Knowledge of stone chemistry and pathology

·  Working knowledge of Scottish cultural and architectural history.

·  Sound knowledge and understanding of conservation philosophy, principals and practice

·  Certifications to operate MEPW’s, abrasive wheels and a aluminium platform tower(PASMA)

·  Competency in working Microsoft office products.

·  A current valid driving licence.

Essential

·  Demonstrable skills in successful budget and financial management, combined with clear evidence of commercial awareness and previous sales experience.

·  Demonstrable high levels of interpersonal and communication skills and confidence in dealing with apprentice training and external consultants/contractors

·  Competent user of Microsoft Office products

A current valid driving licence

Desirable

·  Extra mural experience – for example William Morris Craft Fellowship, SPAB, Historic Scotland Craft Fellowship, Quinque Fellowship or similar.
