PUPPY FIRST AID KIT CHECKLIST

Careful supervision can go a long way to keeping your puppy safe, but some accidents are unavoidable. If your puppy gets injured, the most important thing for you to do is remain calm. Be sure you’ve read section 4.2 of your manual regarding what to do in case of any event requiring medical care, ranging from heat stroke to bee stings to poisoning.

Here is a list of some articles that should be included in a First Aid Kit for your pup. They should be kept in a handy sealed container in the home or in the car. Don't forget to take it with you when traveling.

·  Blunt nose scissors - to cut away long hair and to cut tape and bandages

·  Tweezers – to remove bee stings, splinters, glass shards, ticks, foxtails etc.

·  Gauze pads – to make a bandage

·  Gauze rolls - not only to bandage but to possibly muzzle your dog

·  Adhesive tape – for securing bandages

·  Cohesive flexible bandage - great for wrapping a wound and not having it pull hair like adhesive bandages

·  Towel or blanket - serves many purposes: covering a puppy to prevent shock, controlling temperature, transporting the pup, controlling the pup

·  Neosporin Ointment™ - for use on minor wounds or burns

·  Hydrogen peroxide (3% solution) - to clean wounds

·  Styptic powder/pencil or alum powder – to stop bleeding nails

·  Rectal thermometer

·  K-Y™ jelly or Vaseline™ – to lubricate a rectal thermometer

·  Names and phone numbers of your leaders and veterinarian

·  Any medications your puppy usually takes

·  A flashlight – to check ears and eyes

·  An old sock - to protect bandaged feet

·  Spoon or syringe for administering fluids

·  Cotton balls

·  Q-tips

Periodically check the expiration dates and replace items when necessary. And most importantly, remember to remain calm and contact your leader as soon as possible.
