Duties

On behalf of the Government of Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) provides leadership in the growth and development of a competitive, innovative, and sustainable Canadian agriculture and agri-food sector. Within this context, the Sherbrooke Research and Development Centre (Sherbrooke RDC) invites applications for a Research Scientist position with specialization in Management and Treatment of Effluents focused on treatment and valorization of livestock (dairy and pork) wastes.

Management and Treatment of Effluents research projects conducted at the Sherbrooke RDC are recognized worldwide and are designed to develop practices that allow producers to mitigate environmental risks related to dairy and pork activities and to add value to animal and associated wastes typical to dairy and pork farm operations. The research program of the incumbent will focus on developing innovative technologies for the treatment and valorization of effluents of the agri-food industry including the elimination of biological and chemical contaminants. The incumbent will apply her/his knowledge of the chemical and physical processes involved in the various types of farm effluent treatments and of the impacts of current on-farm livestock effluent management practices on ecosystems, biodiversity and their social acceptability.

He or she will investigate of various effluent treatment systems for different livestock operations in order to identify best practices and provide original knowledge on approaches and processes used to add value to agri-food wastes. He or she must also know the main tools for automating and monitoring prototypes that will be used for treating the air and agricultural by-products. He or she will prepare research proposals and secure funding to carry out the work, and coordinate and monitor research projects for the study of physical units and parameters to treat livestock effluents, their corresponding microbial communities and reduction/elimination of contaminants. These projects will involve planning and management experience and the management of technical personnel ensuring the realization of laboratory work and field, statistical data analysis and writing of scientific and technical publications.
