Job Description

Job Purpose

Working under the supervision of theMHP OT to enable comprehensive OT assessment and intervention and to provide additional clinical support to the recovery team to promote and model reablement.

Key Responsibilities

  • To use evidence based principles to assess, support and work collaboratively with individuals within the clinical and recovery focused service
  • To implement and evaluate interventions
  • To manage a defined caseload, using evidence based/service user centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate
  • To provide graded, evidence based interventions including group work interventions
  • To maintain clinical records
  • To develop skills and knowledge through participation in relevant training and learning opportunities
  • To participate in clinical supervision by MHP OT and group clinical supervision from an outside facilitator and the appraisal process
  • To support the development of links within the local community, providing opportunities for social inclusion, vocational rehabilitation and meaningful sustainable activities.
Service delivery
  • To take a proactive role in conducting assessments for any new clients, providing recommendations for admission with reference to particular functional skills
  • To run groups and individual sessions based on helping clients overcome obstacles in social and practical living terms
  • To make suggestions for any aids and adaptations needed
  • To provide support to staff teams, information and advice relating to OT skills set
  • To provide vocational support to clients in preparation for work or work related activities
  • To observe, monitor and supervise recovery workers in delivering directed (OT) interventions to clients, in order for clients to feel fully supported in their recovery
Clinical Responsibilities
  • To comply with the British College of Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and national and local policies and procedures
  • To undertake occupational therapy assessments for a designated caseload, addressing occupational performance and skill deficits, enabling the service user in areas of self-maintenance, productivity and leisure
  • To work with service users to identify OT goals as part of the overall care plan
  • To plan and implement individual and/or group interventions, in collaboration with the service user, using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals
  • To monitor and evaluate treatment in order to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of the intervention
  • To be professionally and legally responsible for all aspects of your own work, including the management of Service users in your care, with the support of MHP OT
  • To contribute to the interpretation and analysis of clinical and non-clinical facts with MHP OT and Psych and Recovery workers to produce formulations of individuals
  • To formulate client centred treatment plans, using clinical reasoning that demands concentration to understand the effect of disability and illness on the Service user
  • To monitor, evaluate, interpret and modify treatment in order to measure a service user’s progress to ensure effectiveness of intervention and rehabilitation
  • To be involved in supporting service users to move on to more independent living
  • To provide advice to patients, relatives, carers and other relevant health care staff on lifestyle changes that will affect the patient
  • To assess for appropriate adaptive equipment and necessary housing modificationsif required to enable the service user to move into the house or to move on from the service
  • To develop confidence when communicating sensitive or unwelcome news to service users, carers, relatives and other professionals and also in dealing with difficult situations
  • To maintain accurate, comprehensive and up-to-date documentation, in line with legal and departmental requirements, and communicate assessment and treatment results to the service user, other members of the team and outside professionals, including both written and verbal feedback as required

Management and Leadership

  • To be responsible for a designated area of work, with the support of a MHP Occupational Therapist, and to plan and organise efficiently and effectively with regard to clinical priorities and use of time
  • To be responsible for supporting, advising and supervising designated unqualified staff or students, e.g. Recovery Team, Occupational Therapy students
  • To participate in the staff appraisal scheme forming a relevant Personal Development Plan (PDP)
  • To be involved with the induction and training programme of new staff

Research and development/ audit

  • To be actively involved in the collection of appropriate data and statistics for the use of the project
  • Participate in project audits and CQC inspections as needed

Environment/ location

  • Daily work in confined spaces
  • Frequent interruptions to concentration working in a busy project and office environments
  • Daily use of computer in office environment
  • To be able to drive service users to enable them to take part in activities etc.
  • May occasionally be exposed to unpleasant working conditions (e.g. verbal aggression, poor personal hygiene) and emotional effort, including working with clients with complex emotional and behavioural needs, and exposure to sensitive information regarding past history. The post holder may also be required to respond to emergencies on occasions
