Public Health Notice for Willow Creek Reservoir
The Morrow County Health Department has received a health alert from the Oregon Health Authority for Willow Creek Reservoir (Heppner OR). Recent water samples have tested positive for blue-green algae and the toxins they produce.
What is a harmful algae bloom (HAB)? What do freshwater algae blooms look like?
Blue-green algae (also called cyanobacteria) are common in freshwater and seawater. When conditions are right they multiply and form blooms. Cyanobacteria can produce harmful toxins or cyanotoxins.
The blooms can look like a mat, foam or scum, or like paint floating on the water. It is important to notethat they are not always visible. The bloom can smell bad when the cyanobacteria in the bloom die.
What are the health risks of exposure to harmful algae? Who is at risk?
Skin irritation or rash is the most commonly reported health effect. Other symptoms range from diarrhea, cramps and vomiting to fainting, numbness, dizziness, tingling and paralysis. The most severe reactions occur when large amounts of water are swallowed. People, pets, wildlife, and livestock are at risk. Seek medical attention if you think someone has been exposed.
What water activities are unsafe in algae-affected water?
Ingestion or inhalation of water or spray during recreation activities (e.g., swimming, boating, water skiing, jet skiing) can be harmful . Wearing a wet suit does not prevent skin exposure.
Can I treat algae-affected water to make it safe to drink or use?
No. Personal water filtration devices that may be purchased in outdoor recreational stores have not been proven to be effective. Boiling the water will not remove the toxins.
Is it safe to eat fish caught in algae-affected water?
Fish caught in affected waters pose unknown health risks. If you choose to eat them, remove all fat, skin and organs before cooking because toxins are more likely to collect in these tissues.
