Meet the team
Deborah Taylor, Public health education manager
Deborah has over 25 years’ experience working in the NHS within health promotion and public health. Previous to this she was employed by the voluntary sector in a counselling/advice capacity. Her education portfolio is very diverse and she has substantial experience in the development, delivery and evaluation of both generic and specialist courses and programmes in the areas of substance use, sexual health, mental health and wellbeing, men’s health, women’s health, schools and young people, healthy lifestyles, equality and diversity. Deborah also has experience of project management, assessor for accredited courses, and consultant for the healthy schools standard.

Paul Sullivan, Public health facilitator
Paul Sullivan has worked for the public health education team since 2006. Specialising in providing training and education around substance misuse Paul has also developed programmes dealing with healthy lifestyles, health behaviour change, screening and brief advice and motivational interviewing. Prior to joining the team Paul worked in specialist substance misuse services. This involved a range of settings including residential rehabilitation, young people’s services, primary care, statutory and voluntary agencies. Paul has a Master’s degree in Public Health and also holds a post graduate diploma in addiction studies.

Adele Holmes, Public health facilitator
Adele joined the public health education team after making the transition from education as a secondary school teacher specialising in Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) and with the responsibility for being the emotional health and wellbeing lead for 14 – 19yr olds. Prior to this Adele had experience working in a vast range of settings including young people’s services, social care, statutory and voluntary agencies. Adele has postgraduate qualifications in both secondary and community education and a wide ranging experience in the development, delivery and evaluation of both generic and specialist courses and programmes in the areas of sexual health, mental health and wellbeing, schools and young people.

Lorraine Richardson, Course administrator
Lorraine has been employed as an administrator in the NHS for over eight years. Previous to this role, Lorraine worked in private industry as an office manager and personal secretary. Lorraine has experience in customer relations and information technology.

About the Course:
Making what can be big changes to your lifestyle and behaviour can be very difficult. Even when the impact of behaviour such as smoking, drinking alcohol, not taking enough exercise, poor diet, unsafe sexual practices and so on is having a negative effect on health, attempts to change behaviour can very often be unsuccessful.
This course will help you to understand the influence of psychological and behavioural factors on health and lifestyle whilst also developing skills to ensure that staff are better equipped to help the people they work with change health related attitudes and behaviour.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the course participants will be able to:
· Understand models and theories relating to behaviour change and the process of change.
· Acknowledge the psychological influences on a person’s behaviour.
· Use appropriate techniques to promote positive behaviour change.
· Reflect on working practices around lifestyle and behaviour change.

Child Sexual Exploitation
About the course:
Often hidden from view and associated with many risk taking behaviours, Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) can often go unnoticed, causing considerable trauma and distress to young people that can stay with them for life.
This course will raise awareness of key issues linked to (CSE) and potential behaviours and vulnerabilities professionals should be aware of when working with young people. The course is suitable for any professional who may be working with children, young people and their families, particularly Child Protection Officers in schools, professionals working in health services, youth and community services and third sector colleagues.
Learning Outcomes:
On completion of the course participants will be able to:
· Understand the current CSE picture
· Understand the terms ‘sexual exploitation’, ‘grooming’ and ‘trafficking’
· Identify how risk taking behaviours young people undertake may link to CSE including what might make a young person vulnerable to trafficking and sexual exploitation.
· Signpost individuals to Local and National sources of support and referral

Communications Skills using NLP
(Neuro Linguistic Programming)

About the course:
NLP explores the relationship between how we think (neuro), how we communicate (linguistic) and how we behave (programmes). NLP is a powerful change management tool, by studying and learning from others preferred communication styles, by mirroring and matching these you can positively influence behaviour change more effectively. NLP is a series of tools and techniques you can use within any interaction to achieve a more positive outcome.
Learning outcomes:
On completion of the course participants will be able to:
· Understand different NLP programme ‘types’
· Recognise the impact of your communications on others and how to manage your
behaviour for more positive outcomes
· Improve and enhance your interpersonal communication with clients/service users
· Explore your own motivations, needs and behaviours and use this learning to identify positively impact on others
· Identify practical tools and techniques to enhance communication using NLP practises.

Public speaking can be a very daunting experience whether delivering a short presentation or facilitating a group or training session. This course will help you to plan and deliver your presentations regardless of whom your audience may be and also help you to overcome any difficulties you might have along the way.
