PSUK Judo Championships 2006 8-10th September 2006

Hosted by Greater Manchester Police at ManchesterUniversity.

Another excellent Championship was held over the weekend with over 100 competitors from all corners of the UK taking part. There were some new faces and some not so new. Notably amongst the new faces was Samantha Kelly from Metropolitan police who won the under 63kg category in impressive style. Lauren Slater from West Yorkshire came through to win the under 70kg and the ladies open in a faultless display, these two youngsters represent a bright future for ladies police judo.

A couple of the older faces returned and upset a few of the regular medalists including Dave Morrisey (Met) and Martin Foster (Hants), who both showed they can mix it with the best in police judo.

With selection for the USPE Championships in Russia being finalised in November, the committee had a good chance to see the talent available. The selections will be made based on PSUK results, other civilian competition results and commitment to the section.

On a very sad note, we lost Ryan Hunt from the West Midlands this year. Ryan, who was a strong supporter of the section and an excellent judo player, was killed in tragic accident whilst on operational duties in another force area. A trophy was donated by the West Midland Police Judo section and Ryan’s sister Stephanie traveled to Manchester in order to personally present the trophy to the winner of the under 73kg open grade section. This was the weight category which Ryan was most associated with and Ryan will be fondly remembered each year when this trophy is presented to the winner of that category.

John Ellis, also of West Midlands won the Brian Rollings trophy for the best performance of the day.

The evening was completed with dinner, speeches from ACC David Jones of GMP, DCI Andy Moss from Cheshire Police; representing PSUK and Neil Adams MBE, who kindly attended with his wife Nicky to present medals. Winners were honored to receive medal from the ex World Champion and twice Olympic Silver Medalist. Also in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Barraclough, Richard is an 8th Dan, Chair of the BJA North West area and honorary PSUK coach.

Next Year the Championships will be hosted by West Midlands Police.

Thanks go to PMAS for their continued support to PSUK.
