THE ROCK

Psalm 18: 2—The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.

Isaiah 26: 4--Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord, the Lord, is the Rock eternal.

2 Samuel 22:3--The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation.

2 Samuel 22: 32--For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God?

One of the definitions of “rock” in Webster’s dictionary is “Something resembling or suggesting a rock, as a firm support, source of strength, etc.”

The Bible calls Jesus “the rock” and many of the Old Testament prophets refer to God as “the rock”.

Living in Colorado we know what real rocks look like. Those of us close enough to the foothills and mountains know what really big rocks look like. If you have ever visited the Rocky Mountains you know what I am talking about. Not only are they large but solid. They are amazing and have stood since the first days of the earth.

When we read the parable of the foolish man that builds his house on the sand and the wise man that builds his house on the rock, (refer to Mathew 7:24-27) those of us that are familiar with these big rocks in the mountains get it. Rocks are big and solid and immovable.

That is our God and our Jesus. God is big and solid and immovable. He is a firm support and a source of strength. Never changing. He is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

It is a comfort knowing that no matter what we can go to the rock and we will have the firm support of our God. We can draw on the source of strength that Jesus offers us.

Knowing we have such a source of strength to support us gives us hope. In the world today there are so many people going about day by day with no hope. When trials and troubles come into their lives they have nowhere to turn. There is nothing “solid” to support them. But we, as Christians, live with hope in good times and bad. There is the hope that we can go to the rock and be comforted and supported. We will not be shaken or moved because the rock on which we stand will not be moved or shaken.

There is a great song that goes like this “I go to the rock of my salvation. I go to the stone that the builders rejected. I run to the mountain and the mountain stands by me. When the world all around me is sinking sand it’s on the solid rock I stand. When I need a shelter or when I need a friend I go to the rock.”

What a comfort in knowing we can all go to the rock!
