Do you have a favorite picture of your family? How about the patent or deed for the land your great-grandparents homesteaded? Or, your own marriage certificate?

Would you like to know how to take care of these family treasures?

Nicodemus National Historic Site is sponsoring a FREE hands-on workshop at the Visitor Center/Township Hall inNicodemus, Kansas on June 7th. Anyone interested is welcome to attend, but we ask that you register beforeMay 1stsince we can only accommodate 30 people. The visitor center is located at 304 Washington Avenue in Nicodemus, Kansas, just off State Highway 24.

This workshop will show you how to clean, make minor repairs, and store the family papers and pictures that you want to pass on to your children and grandchildren. Nancy Sherbert and Darrell Garwood from the Kansas State Historical Society will demonstrate and talk about the ways to care for these valued items. Each participant will receive a package of archival materials and how-to brochures you can use to preserve more of your treasures at home.

Bring your old family papers (letters, diaries, family Bibles, account books, land grants, marriage certificates, etc.) and family photographs. Nancy and Darrell will give you advice on how to protect these treasures. They can also tell you if you need to take the item to a professional for more in-depth treatment.

Deborah Dandridge of the Spenser Research Library/University of Kansas and Angela Bates of Nicodemus Historical Society will talk about the importance of the Nicodemus collection housed at the University. Representatives of Graham County Historical Society and Rooks County Historical Society will also share information on their collections.

Nicodemus National Historic Site is offering this workshop to encourage the preservation of historical objects related to the history of Nicodemus, Kansas and to encourage preservation of historic objects in general.

This workshop is being coordinated with the Kansas Archeology Training Program (KATP) field school, being held in Nicodemus from June 2 through June 17. More information on KATP is found at
