Proposed Revisions
The Early Childhood Care and Education Working Committee, in collaboration with the Early Childhood Care and Education State Technical Committee, recommends the revisions to standards stated in the attached Early Childhood Care and Education Probe Report.
Recommended Action -- DTAE staff:
Recommend proposed revisions, except recommend changing d. lab to p. lab in ECE 112, Curriculum Development, reducing the credit from 4 to 3 and total from 111 to 110, meeting mandated maximum.
Recommended Action -- Joint VPIS/Presidents Ad Hoc Standards Committee:
Concur with DTAE Staff and recommend proposed revisions with the following exceptions:
- recommend changing d. lab to p. lab in ECE 112, Curriculum Development, reducing the credit from 4 to 3 and total from 111 to 110, meeting mandated maximum.
- Correcting errors in the probe regarding the competencies for ECE 113 and 114 and other minor errors.

Board approved recommended changes to be implemented immediately and must be implemented by Fall Quarter 2001.

Brief Description of Process followed
The state wide technical committee met on November 27, 2000 and thoroughly reviewed the competencies for each early childhood course. Recommendations were made to add, delete or change competencies. The recommendations were taken to the working committee for evaluation. The working committee considered whether or not changes were necessary and if so how they impacted the program as a whole. The working committee also reviewed existing programs and evaluated them based on industry needs and made recommendations accordingly.

Topics include: concepts of creativity; art media, methods, and materials for creative activities; planning and preparation of art lessons; appreciation of children's art processes and products; developmental stages in art; and aesthetic appreciation. Examines ways in which the experienced and beginning early childhood teacher can plan and implement a comprehensive parent involvement program. Emphasis will be placed on fostering the preschool and early elementary child’s multicultural and anti-bias sensitivity through the family involvement in the child’s care and education on several levels. Addresses parent education and support, teacher-parent communication, community partnerships, social diversity and Anti-bias Issues, transitioning the child,
and school family activities.
. Topics include: child assessment and documentation, application of guidance techniques, linguistics and social diversity issues, anti-bias issues, parent interaction, and interpersonal skills.
