Proportion - mixed examples

Look at each of the questions and decide whether it is direct or inverse proportion before you start calculating

1.  A cook finds that in order to give 100 pupils lunch she needs 30kg of potatoes. What quantity must be ordered for 350 pupils?

2.  When going on holiday to France, Mary changed £150 to Euros and received 250 Euros. How many Euros would she be given for £125?

3.  A boy can put 400 leaflets into envelopes in 30 minutes. How long should it take him, at the same rate, to put 500 leaflets into envelopes? (Answer to the nearest whole number of minutes)

4.  A boy’s average step is 60cm and his father’s is 72cm. The boy takes 840 steps for a certain distance. How many steps would his father take?

5.  A toy car is made to a scale of 1 : 25. What are the length and the breadth of the model if the actual car is 5 metres long and 2 metres broad?

6.  One train takes 5 hours for a certain journey, travelling at a speed of 56km/h. A second train does the same journey in 4 hours. What is its speed?

7.  A farmer has enough cattle feed for his 50 cattle to last 10 weeks. If he sells 10 of the cattle, how much longer will the food last?

8.  An agent received commission of £70 on sales totalling £1800. At the same rate

a)  what commission would he receive on sales of £6200?

b)  what sales would earn him commission of £48?

9.  6 tins of Chumpy dog food last Rover 4 days. How long will 15 tins last, assuming he eats at the same rate?

10.  In a library it is estimated that 42 metres of shelving is required for every 1000 books. What length of shelving is required for 2250 books?

11.  A chicken farmer estimates he has enough grain etc to feed his 2000 hens for a fortnight. If he acquired 800 more hens, how long could he feed them all for before requiring more feed?

12.  A railway journey between towns took 2 ¾ hours. If a new type of engine is used which increases the speed of the train from 72 to 82 ½ km per hour, how many minutes will be saved on the journey?

13.  A builder aims to complete a job in 48 days and takes on 14 men to do so. After 16 days the work is held up by bad weather for 11 days. How many more men are required to help finish the job on time?
