PROPANE SAFETY

BSA regulations state that no liquid fuels may be used (kerosene, gasoline, or Coleman fuel). Propane for stoves and lanterns is allowed. While setting up, use nothing that causes a spark, including electrical or battery operated appliances and cell phones. .

Before connecting a stove or lantern,

ü  Make sure the valve is turned off.

ü  Check all connections for dirt, rust, or damage that may cause the propane to leak.

ü  If needed clean with a warm soapy rag and let dry before connecting.

Use soapy water to check for leaks on all connection points.

ü  If there are no bubbles or odor, it is safe to proceed.

ü  If you see bubbles or smell a “rotten egg” odor, turn off the gas, close the valve and fix the connection.

ü  Never use a flame to test for leaks.

Turn the valve open and try lighting the stove or lantern. If it does not light immediately, turn it off and wait for the gas to clear before trying it again.

ü  Always use propane in a well ventilated area.

ü  Never use propane inside a closed shelter and always away from the woods.

ü  Avoid using your stove or lantern near your tent, sleeping bag, or other flammables.

ü  Never leave a lit stove or lantern unattended

ü  Always keep your equipment clean and dry.

Lantern connections:

  1. Check that the valve is turned off.

2.  Make sure your mantel is good (burnt but no holes or tears.)

3.  Make sure glass is good with no breaks or cracks.

4.  Makes sure the connection on the lantern and the bottle are clean.

5.  This connection is right-handed or clockwise.

6.  Check for leaks using with soapy water.

7.  Open valve slightly, and attempt to light.

8.  It is never necessary to open a lantern valve completely. The lantern will not burn that bright. You are only wasting propane gas and risking a problem.

Stove connections:

1.  Make sure the valve is turned off.

  1. Make sure to setup your stove on level nonflammable ground.

3.  Stoves have left handed thread or counterclockwise thread.

4.  Forcing this connection will damage the treads and connection.

5.  You need two people to attach the hose to the stove.

6.  One holds the hose, while the other tightens the connection by hand to finger tight.

7.  Tighten with wrench 1/8 turn. DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.

8.  Check for leaks with soapy water.

9.  Open the valve on the propane bottle slightly and attempt to light.

10.  If it does not light, turn off gas valve on bottle and see the QM.

When turning off stove, light the stove.

1.  Close valve on the bottle first.

2.  Let burners go out,

3.  then turn off the valve on stove.

If you have any trouble with your stove or lantern, see the Quartermaster.

REMEMBER….NEVER PLAY WITH FIRE !
