Program and organisational assumptions of studies

Doctoral Studies in the Field of Social Science at the Faculty of Political Sciences and International Studies, the University of Warsaw

Candidate profile:

The study programme is addressed to graduates of second-cycle studies (full Masters programme or equivalent) – with no restrictions concerning the field. The candidates should be active and creative people who wish to pursue further studies and comprehensively develop their skills by broadening their academic knowledge and conducting research.

Aim of studies:

The aim of the studies is for the graduates to be educated specialists with the academic degree of doctor of social science in the field of political science, doctor of social science in the field of safety studies, doctor of social science in the field of public policy.

The courses and research realised during the studies concern the multi-aspect analysis of social and political phenomena in Poland, Europe and the world. Studies are conducted in a full-time mode in Polish and in English and in an extramural mode in Polish. They are implemented according to a unified curriculum in the field of compulsory subjects and didactic development courses.

They are conducted in a two-way system. On the one hand, the students conduct their own research projects under the care of the supervisor or the support supervisor, and on the other hand, they participate in classes (obligatory or to choose) and didactic practices. The learning cycle includes a group of general subjects, and related to the chosen specialization (discipline), elective courses (optional), preparing a doctoral student to do research activities and developing teaching skills, as well as didactic practices. Moreover, students are required to actively participate in the organizational work for the University, the Faculty and its institutes.

The programme of the research performed under the care of the supervisor or the support supervisor covers three learning paths of political science, public policy, and safety studies. The PhD student can also pursue an interdisciplinary path.

The students who pass doctoral exams and submit and successfully defend their PhD dissertations will be granted the academic degree of Doctor of Social Science in the field of Political Science, Doctor of Social Science in the field of Safety, or Doctor of Social Science in the field of Public Policy.

A graduate:

- knows and understands world scientific achievements in the field of the chosen discipline (disciplines) and their implications for practice, and in particular:

·  knows and understands – to the extent that critical approaches to existing paradigms can be made – world scientific achievements that cover: theoretical foundations, general issues and selected issues related to social sciences in the fields of political science, or safety studies, or public policy

·  knows and understands the main development trends of scientific disciplines Included in the education program;

·  knows and understands methodology of social science;

·  knows and understands the fundamental dilemmas of modern civilization;

·  knows and understands economic and legal conditions of research activity.

- can make analysis and creative synthesis of scientific achievements and create new elements of the achievements to identify and solve research problems, in particular:

·  can use social science knowledge for creative identification, formulation and innovative solving of complex problems or to perform research tasks, especially, knows how to define the purpose and object of research, formulate research hypothesis;

·  can conclude on the basis of research results;

·  is able to develop methods, techniques and research tools and to use them creatively;

·  can transfer research results to the political and social sphere.

- can disseminate the results of research, including popular forms.

- can initiate debate and participate in scientific discourse.

- is able to use a foreign language to participate in an international academic community and professional environment.

- is able to plan and implement individual and team research projects, also in an international environment.

- is able to independently plan and act for their own benefit, as well as to inspire and organize the development of others.

- can participate in the exchange of experience and ideas, also in the international environment.

- can develop education or training programs and implement them using modern methods and tools.

- is ready for independent study increasing existing scientific achievements and to face challenges in the professional and public spheres, taking into account their ethical dimension, in particular:

·  is ready to critically evaluate the scientific achievements of a given discipline;

·  is ready to critically evaluate his/her contribution to the development of this discipline;

·  is ready to recognize the importance of knowledge in solving cognitive and practical problems;

·  is ready to fulfill the social obligations of researchers;

Organization of studies

The studies last four years. They are realized in the form of lectures, seminars, works hops, and students’s individual work under the care of the scientific tutor (supervisor or suport supervisor). Students are obliged to practice internships in the form of teaching classes in the university or participation in teaching under the supervision of a experienced academic teacher. The size of teaching practices cannot be smaller than 10, but not greater than 90 per academic year.

Classes for full-time studies are offered from Monday to Friday (in special cases, with the permission of the tutors, it is possible to organize classes on Saturday or Sunday). Classes for extramural studies are conducted on Saturdays and Sundays.
