PROMOTIONS AT THE GARDEN LEAD THE WAY FOR NEXT PHASE

5th September 2017 – Following the news that John Hay is joining the Indie as Chief Creative Officer, The Garden has announced a series of promotions to prepare the company for future growth.

Nicola Hill has been promoted to Director of Production, Kate Collier will become Creative Director, Zac Beattie and Emma Tutty will both serve as Head of Documentaries. Spencer Kelly is to be made Head of Factual while Chloë Solomon becomes Head of Popular Factual.

Temple said: “I’m feeling very ambitious for The Garden and have thought carefully about how to grow the company whilst ensuring we stay true to our DNA. These are richly deserved promotions, but they also give our talented team more ownership and autonomy over specific areas of the company, which in turnshould extend and expand what we can do.”

Nicola Hill will join the Board of The Garden alongside John Hay. Scarlett Ewens, MD and COO said: “As our Head of Production since 2012, Nicola has had an influence over everything we produce. She meets the daily challenges of the uncompromising editorial ambition of our slate with intelligence, grace and skill. A promotion to Director of Production, where she will bring these qualities and more to the running of the wider company, was an obvious next step for her.”

Hill said: “I’m incredibly excited to be joining the Board at The Garden as it enters a renewed phase of creativity. It feels like a particularly innovative, positive and collaborative place to be right now. I’m really looking forward to working with Magnus, Scarlett and John to build on the success of the last sixyears and take the company in new directions.”

Kate Collier has been with the company since 2010, when she joined as Head of Development. As Creative Director she’ll oversee the company’s new business, working closely with Hay and Temple, whilst also serving as executive producer on some key projects.

Temple said: “Kate has been a key part of The Garden’s journey over the last seven years. She’s not only a brilliant originator and developer of ideas, but shecares passionately about our output and I’m excited to see what more she can achieve in this new role”.

Kate said: “Taking on the role of Creative Director at The Garden is a dream come true for me. I couldn’t feel more excited, passionate and ambitious about what we can achieve during this next phase, and I can’t wait to collaborate with the talented team here and across the broadcasters in doing so.”

Zac Beattie and Emma Tuttywill become joint Head of Documentaries with a remit to develop and produce reputational, thought provoking,high-enddocumentaries.

Temple said of the pair: “Emma and Zac have brilliantly complimentary skills – they’re hugely creative and respected execs who bring massive credibility to any idea. I know they’ll thrive on the additional responsibility this new role brings.”

Zac said: “It’s a really exciting moment to be building on the strength of our documentary experience at The Garden, in the broadest sense: to think about the storytelling, access and innovation that will make the best films with the greatest reach. And alongside such an amazing team.”

Emma added: “Having been at The Garden since its launch in 2010, I truly feel that we are entering a new and exciting phase of creativity and I’m thrilled to be part of this. I’m also looking forward to continuing to work with incredibly talented people both at The Garden and within the wider documentary community.”

Spencer Kelly has been responsible for delivering over a hundred hours of programming since joining The Garden in June 2012. His role of Head of Factual will encompass overseeing some of the company’s most important existing factual brands, whilst developing new projects of scale.

Temple said: “Spencer has done such an amazing job, in the consistent quality with which he delivers 24 Hours in A&E, but also in his ability to innovate with a project like 10,000 BC. He’s extremely versatile andbroad shouldered and I’m delighted to have him play an even more significant role in the company.”

Kelly said: “I am thrilled to work alongside such a creative team and to play a part in this exciting new chapter ofThe Garden’s growth.”

Chloë Solomon who is currently on maternity leave will on her return step up the company’s drive into factual entertainment and popular factual.

Temple said “Chloë’s been involved in some of the country’s best known factual entertainment brands, so I can’t think of a better person to be taking a lead in this direction.”

Chloë said: “I'm thrilled to be taking on this new role at The Garden. The company is going through an exciting period of change and it feels like the perfect time to expand our slate of popular factual programmes. I'm looking forward to creating more ambitious, innovative and impactful programmes.”

Nicola Hill

Nicola joined The Garden in January 2012 as Head of Production and oversees all content. She came to the company from David Thompson’s Origin Pictures where, as Production Executive, she managed the business affairs of the company and all their projects, both in development and production for five years. Prior to that she worked with Thompson at BBC Films.

Kate Collier

Kate joined The Garden in 2010 as Head of Development - rising through the ranks at the company to deliver over 40 commissions in various guises, as well as serving as Executive Producer on output including the recent Cutting Edge film, Bring Me Back to Life.

Her highlights include devising BBC Two’sSkies Above Britain, BBC One’s Britain’s Spending Secrets and two upcoming series for Channel 4, plus working with the exec team to develop standout projects Keeping Britain Alive: The NHS In A Day, The Audience andBedlam – all BAFTA-nominated, with the latter winning in 2014.

Kate was previously Head of Development at Mentorn, successfully developing output including Underage and Pregnant for BBC Three,An Idiot Abroadfor Sky 1 and the BAFTA-nominated Cutting Edge filmKatie: My Beautiful Face(which she also AP’d) – growing Katie Piper as Channel 4 talent in a follow-up series. She started her career at BBC Birmingham, on the development team that created Trawlermen and Coast, and as part of the launch team for The One Show.

Emma Tutty

Emma has been with The Garden since its launch in 2010 when she series producedPerfumefor BBC4. Prior to that, she spent six years at Dragonfly where she produced the BAFTA-award winning first series ofOne Born Every Minutefor Channel 4;Goldsmiths - This is Modern Artfro BBC4; and co-produced the feature-length documentaryMurder on The Lake(Grierson nominated) also for BBC Four.

Zac Beattie

Zac joined The Garden in 2011 as an Executive Producer. Before that Zac had been at a variety of indies and the BBC, producing and directing documentary films, including the BAFTA-winning Make Me Normal, the ground-breaking animated documentary The Trouble With Love and Sex and the form-bending, Rich Kid Poor Kid. As an Exec’ at The Garden he’s looked after a range of the documentary output for the BBC and Channel 4, including the wildly ambitious Keeping Britain Alive - The NHS in a Day; The Midwives; The Bank - A Matter of Life and Debt; The Motorway; Inside Rolls Royce; Professor Green - Living in Poverty; and Extremely British Muslims.Amongst other new projects, he’s overseeing a feature doc’ about Britain’s most lethal gun.

Spencer Kelly

Spencer joined The Garden in June 2012 andhas executive produced 100 hours of programming includingThe Midwives(series II) andThe Motorway: Life in the Fast Lane for BBC 2,On the Yorkshire Busesand10,000 BC for Five and three series of 24 hours in A&E.

Prior to that he worked as a freelance producer director on programmes such asFaking it,Ramsay’s Kitchen NightmaresandWife Swap USAbefore series producing programmes for all the major broadcasters including Titanic: The MissionandHidden Talentfor Channel 4.

Chloë Solomon

Chloë joined The Garden in June 2015. As Head of Factual Formats she was responsible for developing new projects and executive producing programmes for the company; most recently the BBC 2 seriesSkies Above Britain.
