Project Worker Job Description

Role:

To provide a range of services to people who self harm, their friends, families and professionals in order to promote health and recovery amongst those suffering emotional distress and self harm.

The role:

  • To provide drop in services for people who self harm, both young people and adults.
  • Assertive outreach to the client group and statutory and third sector organisations.
  • Provide consultations to acute services staff.
  • Multidisciplinary liaison; attend meetings, co-ordinate a collaborative approach to the client’s care; facilitate discussion and communicate effectively across sectors.
  • One to one sessions of support for people who self harm.
  • Record keeping: up to date records maintained of the status of a client’s care, document future approaches and interventions, key partners in the delivery of this care; document any issues of risk.
  • Undertake risk assessments; evaluate issues of risk associated with self harm, suicide, child protection and protection of vulnerable adults; and personal safety.
  • Be involved in service evaluation and research to develop an understanding of the impact of the service, and of the needs of the client group.
  • Develop working tools for service evaluation, and the collection of date about the client group.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Harmless team to develop resources that are innovative and responsive to need.
  • Be involved in healthcare staff development: hold and facilitate seminars and training sessions for staff teams to enhance capacity to engage effectively with people that self harm.
  • Ability to enhance Harmless’ capacity to undertake effective and valuable research

Person specification

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, with a good use of initiative and also be able to work collaboratively and openly within a team
  • Ability to engage with minority and hard to reach communities, good understanding of working in the mental health sector
  • Understand self harm effectively, and have a strong faith in the recovery model of mental distress.
  • An ability to uphold personal and organisational Health and Safety, Equal Opportunities, Child Protection and Protection of Vulnerable Adults
  • Experience of working supportively or therapeutically with people experiencing a range of emotional difficulties, including anxiety, depression and self harm.
  • Ability to deliver training packages to enhance staff development.
  • A strong working understanding of, and a commitment to upholding legislation and policy (including clinical governance, NICE guidance, ethical guidelines (BACP, BABCP), child protection, equal opportunities, risk assessment and confidentiality).
  • Skill in understanding and undertaking research and it’s implications on the client group and the sector.
  • Experience of working with children and young people
  • Experience of mental distress or mental health problems AND recovery appreciated.
