Sidewalk Geometry
Final Due Date: ______
Objective: To design and create a 5ft x 5ft sidewalk square of Geometry art.
Grade: This project will count as a class participation score. The score will be divided into four parts.
General Requirements
The art work must be comprised of geometry shapes only. No free hand drawing or free hand perspective drawing will be accepted. All lines and curves must be created using construction tools: straight edge, compass, ruler, measuring tape, chalk string-line. Part One and Part Two must be completed in color before turning it in. You may use colored pencils, markers or crayons. NO PAINT. Part Three will be completed with chalk. All drawings must be neat and precise.
Part One (5pts)
Your design will first be created on an 8”x 8” piece of paper. Your design must be in color. This Part is due ______. It will be judged on creativity, variety, visual appeal, use of color, and precision of construction.
Part Two (10 Points)
You will then enlarge your design on a 2ft x 2ft piece of butcher paper that will be provided for you. This version must also be done in color. The new drawing must be proportional to the drawing from Part One. On a separate piece of binder paper, you must show the calculations of the dimensions of the new drawing. As with all Similar figures, the ratios of corresponding lengths must be constant. You will submit both the new and the old drawings. Part Two is due ______. It will be judged on precision in scaling-up, and accuracy of replication.
Part Three (15 Points)
You will then enlarge your design again on a 5ft x 5ft sidewalk square on campus. The square on which you will recreate your drawing will be assigned to you. On Tuesday May 25th you will work on your design outside during your Geometry class period, plus lunch and/or after school, if you choose. You will not be excused from other class periods to work on your design. The new drawing must be proportional to the drawing from Part One. After finishing your sidewalk drawing, you will re-submit Parts One and Two, along with your calculations of the dimensions for Part Three relative to Parts One and Two. Part Three will be judged on visual appeal, the quality of geometric constructions, and the neatness of the work.
Additional Requirements for 5ft x 5ft drawing:
• The entire square must be filled. No blank spaces.
• There are to be no markings or writing outside your assigned square.
• No names or identification are to be included in the drawing.
• Clean up after yourself. Don’t leave string, chalk, or tools in the area after you finish.
• Be careful of the squares next to yours. Others have (or will) put a lot of effort into them.
General Advice
• Bring sunscreen and a hat. You will be outdoors for an extended period, and it is often hot.
• Bring a bucket, sponges and brushes for correcting errors and cleaning up.
• Wear clothes that will cushion your knees, and which may get dirty. No skirts or short dresses. The Dress Code will be enforced.
• If you want to use special colors of chalk in your finished drawing, bring them. Some chalk will be provided, but only in general colors (yellow, blue, pink, green, white). There is no guarantee that your choices will be available, particularly later in the day.
• Bring string and/or a yardstick to assist with your constructions.
Part 4
On ______during your geometry period, you will vote on your choice of the most impressive top twenty squares of all geometry classes.
