· Teacher will give students fashion challenges.
· Teacher lecture/demonstration.
· Group critique and feed-back.
· Process discussion.
Building Background:
· As a class we will discuss What Recycling is and how it is our responsibility to take care of our earth. Students will make and generate ideas about...Recycle, Reduce, and Reuse. Lesson starter: Students will do a quick write about this topic. They will put their thoughts and ideas down on paper. This will also serve as an inspiration for students to think about taking ordinary objects and consumer products and transform them into extraordinary fashions.
· During the 3rd session or when students have completed their literacy part of the project, they will use the computer and research “recycled fashion”
· After completing their research, they will go to their sketch books and begin to plan out their design challenge.
Presentation:
· Teacher will present the variety of materials available to use in the “up-cycling”. Students will need to choose from plastic or newspaper. When choosing materials, students should think about which materials will be appropriate for their design.
· Throughout the design process, teacher will circulate the room and give advice and help students think through a given problem. However, students are responsible for resolving the task at hand.
Practice/Application:
· Learners will be responsible for cutting patterns, by using another shirt or a template.
· The technique for cutting, taping and resolving any garment fitting issues, will help students think of shape and form.
· During their learning process the will explore and learn techniques of aesthetically pleasing designs and those that represent their view and personal voice.
· The final challenges will be attempted by using real fabric which will be donated to the elective from a variety of resources.
· The program will culminate with the “repurposing” challenge in which students will take a simple garment such as a tea-shirt, over-sized skirt; sweaters etc. and transform them into a modern wearable piece.
Formative Assessment:
Students' involvement in discussion- (5 pts)
Students initial drawing for a fashion design (10 pts)
Found objects brought in by the student- (5 pts) *half credit for object found in classroom*
Students design for a piece using recycled materials donated to the class (10pts)
Runway:
· Student’s fashion designs will be viewed by invited judges. Each student will model their design, and then a short speaking presentation will take place. Students will speak about their process or answer any question from the judges.
