Project Louisiana 2002

Each Louisiana History student will be obligated to select and complete ONE of the projects listed below as a required part of Louisiana Studies for this year. All constructions, reports, photography, music, or videos must be turned in no later than JAN. 30 and become property of the Social Studies Department at Oak Park Middle School. Those projects not selected to become part of the Library's Louisiana collection must be picked up no later than February 8, 2002.

  • The student, with LIMITED parental or adult help, must complete each project.
  • Each project is an individual assignment, no group work.
  • Each project has a maximum number of points possible upon completion.
  • Lateness will result in ¼ of the total points being deducted per day late.

Anyone failing to complete or turn in a project will receive a

0of a possible 20points.

CONSTRUCTIONS: Projects below must be on a base NO LARGER than 15X15 inches square. Points will be taken off if not within this size. The student with limited parent help should construct the project chosen. No store bought models will be accepted. Suggestions and help with power or electrical equipment is recommended. Final step in the project will be a short 200+ word essay on WHERE the research material was found (books, magazine, internet), WHY this project was chosen, and WHAT the student has learned. No project will be accepted for grading without this documentation.

Choose one of the following:

  • North Louisiana Dogtrot House - max. 20 points
  • South Louisiana Acadian House - max. 20 points
  • Fort St. Jean Baptiste - max. 20 points
  • 1800's style Riverboat - max. 20 points
  • Any Louisiana Plantation - max. 20 pts.
  • The Old or New State Capitol - max. 20 points
  • Superdome - max. 20 points

Smaller constructions:

  • Mardi Gras Float (wooden) with rolling wheels - max. 12 points
  • Flat bottom boat and pirogue with paddles or oars - max. 8 points
  • Louisiana Mobile to hang from ceiling – max 8 points
  • Mardi Gras Float (cardboard) no wheels - max. 4 pts

VIDEO: Projects below must be NO SHORTER than 10 minutes and NO LONGER than 20 minutes. Points will be taken off if not within this size. The project chosen must be largely taped and edited by the student with limited parent help. Editing, voice narration and background music is a must. Suggestions and help with video and editing equipment is recommended. Final step in the project will be a short 200+ word essay on WHERE the research material was found (books, magazine, internet), WHY this project was chosen, and WHAT the student has learned. No project will be accepted for grading without this documentation.

Choose one of the following: All max. 20 points

  • Video of a south Louisiana Historical site
  • Video of the history of sports in Southwest Louisiana
  • Video of a south Louisiana cultural event
  • Video of (FILL-IN-BLANK) -see teacher for approval before beginning.

MUSIC: Project must be no shorter than 3 minutes nor longer than 4. Points will be taken off if not within this guide. The student will produce an ORIGINAL song on cassette or CD of previously unwritten lyrics about the state of Louisiana or its heritage, complete with music. A typed copy of the lyrics must be turned in with the recording. The student with limited parent help should largely produce the project. Suggestions and help with sound equipment is recommended. All recordings must be clear, clean, and "G" rated. Final step in the project will be a short 200+ word essay on WHERE the research material was found (books, magazine, internet), WHY this project was chosen, and WHAT the student has learned. No project will be accepted for grading without this documentation.

  • All music and song recordings -max. 20 points

PHOTOGRAPHY: Projects below must be no less than 24 standard photo prints (no digital or scanned photos or prints). Points will be taken off if not within this guide. The student with limited parent help must largely photograph the project chosen. Suggestions and help with photographic equipment is recommended. All prints must be mounted to a poster or art board and labeled as to their name and location. Final step in the project will be a short 200+ word essay on WHERE the research material was found (books, magazine, internet), WHY this project was chosen, and WHAT the student has learned. No project will be accepted for grading without this documentation.

Choose one of the following:

  • Photographs of Southwest Louisiana landmarks -max. 20 points
  • Photographs of Lake Charles landmarks -max. 20 points
  • Photographs of Southwest Louisiana animals (nature photography) -max. 20 points.
  • Photographs of (FILL-IN-BLANK) -see teacher for approval –max. 20 points
  • Louisiana Photo Silhouette (see sample in class) –max. 20 points

POWER-POINT PRESENTATION: Presentation on selected topic must be between 10 and 12 standard slides complete with a varieties of transitions, appropriate music, good use of Art Fonts, 3-5 correct facts/information bits per slide, and one or more photos on each slide. Final slide should include student name. Points will be taken off if not within this guide. The student with limited parent help must create the project chosen. Suggestions and help with power-point software is recommended. Project must be on PC disk labeled with topic and student name. Final step in the project will be a short 200+ word typed essay on WHERE the research material was found (books, magazine, internet), WHY this project was chosen, and WHAT the student has learned. No project will be accepted for grading without this documentation.

Choose one of the following:

  • Mike Foster vs. Murphy Foster – Grandfather and grandson -max. 20 points
  • If I were a Louisiana Native American, what happened to me? -max. 20 points
  • In Louisiana, how would I change a law I didn’t like -max. 20 points.
  • History of the Lake Charles Charpentier District –max. 20 points
  • Lake Charles’ own, Governor Sam Jones –max. 20 points
  • Antebellum Slave folklore –max. 20 points

REPORTS: Projects below must be no less than 750 handwritten words from sources other than textbook PLUS a minimum of four full color hand-drawn illustrations relating to the topic completed by the student. Points will be taken off if not within this guide. The project chosen must be largely re-searched by the student with limited parent help. Suggestions and help is recommended. Sources of material must be listed on the next to last page in a proper bibliography. Final page in the project will be a paragraph on WHY this project was chosen, and WHAT the student has learned. No project will be accepted for grading without this documentation.
