Project 1.Construction of a pumpout facility at XX Marina, Kentucky Lake

NEED:

XX Marina is located on KentuckyLake in western Kentucky. KentuckyLake is undoubtedly the premiere reservoir in Kentucky and offers the states best opportunities for largemouth bass and crappie fishing. KentuckyLake also offers numerous additional recreational opportunities including vacationing, pleasure boating, skiing, personal watercraft, and wildlife viewing. Additionally, KentuckyLake has seen a dramatic increase, in recent years, in the number of transient boaters who utilize KentuckyLake (part of the Tennessee River system) as part of their traveling route towards their vacation destinations.

XX Marina currently has 130 full time slip holders located at their marina. Many of the owners of these slips are weekend boaters, although there is an increasing number of boaters who utilize these slips on a daily basis. In addition, XX Marina has recently been awarded a TIER II Boating Infrastructure Grant award to aid with the construction of a new 850 ft transient dock to be located at the marina. This new dock system will accommodate as many as twenty 50 ft transient boats at a time. Seven additional slips are in transit, thus allowing the ability to dock as many as 27 transient boats at a time on this new dock structure. The vast majority of the cruisers and houseboats that utilize our slips have marine sanitary devices (MSD’s) which require the ability to routinely pumpout marine sewage. We are in need of a fully functioning pumpout system that is capable of servicing the existing number of boaters present at the marina, in addition to the number of new boaters who will utilize the newly constructed 850 ft transient boat dock.

OBJECTIVE:

To provide for the proper disposal of marine sewage from transient boaters, as well as large cruisers and houseboats. XX Marina would like to do its part in helping to improve the water quality of KentuckyLake that is important to recreational boaters, anglers, and tourists, as well as the fish and wildlife that are dependent upon it.

EXPECTED RESULTS AND BENEFITS:

A pumpout facility will increase the number of sewage pumpouts occurring at XX Marina. We also hope to encourage compliance with the Clean Vessel Act Grant program by providing marine sewage disposal to all users at KentuckyLake, in addition to those users who own slips at the marina. Proper marine sewage disposal is an important step in keeping the water quality of KentuckyLake clean.

APPROACH:

A new peristaltic pumpout station will be installed to the new 850 ft transient boat dock at XX Marina. This new pumpout station will be equipped with two hydrants that will allow for the removal of sewage from two boats at a time. A new lift station will be installed that will pump sewage from the boats to the already established sewer line system. This sewage line system is then treated at the sewage treatment facility in Aurora, Kentucky. A token machine will be installed, which will allow boaters to utilize this pumpout system 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
