Progress Report for Urban CLTS in Nairobi
After the Urban CLTS training for City Council officers that was held in May 2012, five new communities were triggered in 5different divisions across the eastland’s of Nairobi. These villages had been selected by the community development officers about 4months before the training as areas favorable for UCLTS. The same areas had been year marked by the City Council of Nairobi and included in the Community Development Officers targets for 2012 after our consultation with the Social Services and Housing Department where the Community Development Section falls. The communities triggered were Kangurwe village in Embakasi division, Kware village in Kasarani division, Motherland village in Kamukunji division, Lunga lunga village in Makadaradivision and Kosovo in Starehe division.
By December 2012 from the date of triggering, there has been great progress from all the villages. Below is a summary of success story in a table.
Village / Community Progress / SuccessKosovo in Starehe / They have organized sanitation committees who have been monitoring to ensure that no one defecates in the open. /
- Usage of the existing toilets has increased (the area has a lot of toilets which were not used).
- One of the Natural leaders was nominated as a councilor.
Kware in Kasarani / They have brought together church leaders, administration and landlords to be in their sanitation committee. /
- The landlords have built 5new toilets for their tenants which have reduced OD.
Kangurwe in Embakasi / They organized a clean up to mobilize their community and invited the Community Health Workers and the local administration to the event. /
- The landlords have built three new toilets.
- The community organized and managed to renovate two toilets through their political aspirants.
Lunga lunga in Makadara / They organized a procession and clean up to mobilize community members and involved the administration. /
- They have managed encourage landlords to build 15new toilets which are used as private (within the plots) and others as public.
Motherland in Kamukunji / They organized as natural leaders and started meetings with their leaders (Member of Parliament, Councilor and the local Administration) /
- They write a proposal to their area MP who funded the construction of a toilet immediately.
- They have now a new sanitation block and 2 toilets built by the landlords for their tenants in a plot.
Much more have been going on now that the Community Development Officers are constantly on the ground offering their support and organizing them to ensure that sanitation remains a priority in their community.
