Program: Finance Internship

Location: Australia

The suggestion is that the internship will cover a three month period. The interns spend time in teams to get exposure to the kind of tasks that are being undertaken.

Activities that could be undertaken while in each area:

Financial Control

Our Financial Control team provides stewardship and control of the numbers. They deliver Regulatory and Statutory reporting, manage regulatory relationships and provide technical accounting advice. This team is responsible for the preparation of monthly consolidated P&L and Balance sheets, as well as management of financial governance and assurance.

While most of the day-to-day ‘accounting’ is undertaken offshore, there is a large governance and compliance requirement and suggested tasks for an intern are:

  • Supporting the Finance Governance Programme – validation that process are being carried out in line with approved documentation and that appropriate, relevant evidence is in place and readily accessible.
  • Assisting in the preparation of supporting schedules for accounting entries – e.g. supporting intercompany balances, journal entries
  • Preparation of analysis into, for example, specific expense categories and reporting findings

Business Partners

Our Finance Business Partners (BPs) provide strategic insight and proactive financial analysis and advice to the businesses they support. They have a detailed understanding of business performance and provide analysis and business commentary. They are also involved in developing the Business Unit or Country Specific strategic and operating plan and forecasting.

Business Partners are mainly senior members of the Finance Community, but an intern could benefit from shadowing a Business Partner to get an insight into how to manage the relationship between Finance and the Business and to see first-hand how a strong relationship can drive excellent business performance.

Financial Planning and Analysis

Our Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) team delivers business driver based planning and forecasting, as well as insightful reporting. The team provides an in-depth analysis and drivers of our business to drive accountability and productivity. The Group FP&A team are also responsible for managing our existing investment slate and evaluating new capital.

It is important for Interns to recognise the importance of reporting actuals against a target. Within FP&A, the intern can be exposed to the concepts of Plan and Forecast and assist in the preparation of reports (written, numerical or graphical) and analysis used to support the business.

During the internship the intern could assist in running standard reports, basic variance analysis and preparing some basic commentary.

Project Accounting

The Project Accounting function is responsible for the preparation of financials for our projects governance body and for Management Board approved projects.

Based on the input and direction provided by our key Project and BAU Finance Stakeholders, the team delivers project finance information including monthly reporting, forecasting and planning & analysis.

This is achieved by following established processes and procedures to ensure that the service provided is consistent and scalable.

Working in Project there are opportunities for interns to undertake some key tasks, including:

  • Review accrual and capex journals to supporting documentation
  • Review Balance Sheet reconciliations to supporting documentation
  • Monitor Project Accounting shared mailbox and assist in self-service registration of opex projects
  • Produce the monthly Project Accounting management report and collate commentary

Systems Access

Regardless what team the intern is assigned to, it is important given the short tenure that they have adequate system access to be able to work effectively. We need to make sure that the intern is established in good time, at least 4 (6?) weeks before they commence as delays in getting system access will, at very least, restrict the interns ability to deliver against the objectives we set them.
