We have actively working on obtaining a cross section of our practice population represented on the PPG. We have flyers in the patients’ waiting areas and on the reception desk asking for interest and there is section on our practice website where patients can join the PPG. During a visit by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), we were encouraged to proceed with the patients who had thus far expressed a willingness to be involved and increase the group as time progressed.

Our virtual group are patients who have given us their contact details via our practice website.

We continue to encourage more patients to be involved in our PPG, for both the virtual group and to identify missing target populations in our face-to-face group.

Patient survey – how we determined the priorities.

Priorities for the patient survey and how they were agreed

At our first meeting of our practice participation group which was held on 19 February 2014 the group decided that the area upon which they wished to focus was Opening Times. The survey was created and then emailed to the PPG for comment. The survey was approved and ran on the practice website and within the practice from 26 February 2014 until 19 March 2014.

The survey was deliberately left simple to encourage as many patients as possible to complete the survey.

Patient survey – process for completion

We contacted all PPG members and asked them to complete the survey. We also emailed all patients who had registered their details on our practice website to invite them to also complete the survey. Hard copies of the survey were available within the practice and patients were encouraged to complete these by our reception staff.

Patient survey – Commentary and Action Plan

Everyone at The Park Surgery would like to thank patients for participating in the annual survey, which on this occasion looked at patients’ views of The Park Surgery’s opening times.

Who participated?

We received responses from 111 patients.

Discussion with PPG

The results of the patient survey were discussed at the PPG held on 19 March 2014. The practice is delighted that 84% of patients who responded to the survey were satisfied with our opening hours. It was also reassuring that 82% of patients knew how to access services outside of the surgeries usual opening hours and 77% of patients were aware of the NHS111 service.

Action plan

As the response to the practice’s opening hours had been very positive, it was suggested and agreed by the PPG that the opening hours be reviewed further in the future when more information was known about the requirements for 7 day a week opening for general practice.

It was agreed that the practice should check whether the Minor Injuries Unit in Driffield also saw Minor Ailments as the Bridlington MIU did.

It was agreed that the survey results should be available in the waiting rooms so patients could add their comments if they wished to do so.

It was agreed that the practice should publicise opening times as 1% of the survey respondents indicated that they were not aware of the opening hours.

Action plan actions

MIU at the Alfred Bean Hospital is for minor injuries, not minor ailments. The staff at the MIU have asked that patients contact the NHS111 service when the surgery is closed if they have a minor ailment.

This report will be available in the practice’s waiting rooms with a sheet attached for patients comments.

Opening hours are contained within this report, within the practice booklet and are on display on the entrance doors of the practice. They are also stipulated on the sign at the car park entrance. A flyer will be made available in the practice for patients to take away with them if they want to do so.
