C) It takes hours and makes very little difference to the planet.

D) Can you imagine what our countryside will look like?

E) Now people who call themselves green seem to think that they know better than the rest of us.

GOING ‘GREEN’: IS IT REALLY A GOOD IDEA?

How green are you? Being green used to mean that you were young and inexperienced. 0. __E__ But just how intelligent are these new Greens? How well do their ideas work in practice?

Take the example of what happened this week to Donna Challice, mother of three children from Exeter. She was taken to court for not recycling her rubbish. She was charged with putting food in the green recycling bin which is in fact for cans, paper, plastic, and glass. She faced a fine of up to £1.000 and the court case cost much more than that! What a waste of the Court’s time and money. The reality is that recycling household rubbish is a waste of all our time. 36. _____ Only 5% of our waste is made up of household rubbish, while a massive 60% agricultural and industrial. Why don’t the laws do something about that first?

And it isn’t only local governments that really want to be green. We are surrounded by green thinkers. Have those people who refuse to accept nuclear energy thought about what renewable energy means? They say that 20% of our energy has to come from renewable resources such as wind and solar power. 37. _____There will be forests of giant wind turbines and nothing in the fields except plants to make bio-fuel. It seems that there is no real alternative to using more nuclear energy, so why don’t we focus on building new safer nuclear plants?

The European Parliament has just agreed to put new taxes on airlines - to stop pollution - and cut the growing number of cheap flights. Think about what this means. For the first time in history, it isn’t only the rich and wealthy that can fly to other parts of the world. 38. _____ However, the European Parliament wants to stop all that.

As for the traffic congestion problems, the mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, introduced a charge on people who drive into the city. Since then, every other city in the country has been thinking of doing the same. But London is the only city in the country that actually has an excellent transport system. 39. _____ The government seems determined to get us out of our cars. The latest idea is to charge everyone up to £1.34 a mile to drive their own cars. But what are we supposed to use instead? I would take the train to work if it weren’t always hours late and so crowded that I am forced to stand all the way. Thank goodness I’ve got a car and the choice is mine!

TEXT II

Questions 40-43

Read the following text and on your optic form, mark the alternative (A, B, C or D) which best completes the statements or answers the questions. (4x1.5=6 marks)

Carbon dating can be used to estimate the age of any organic natural material; it has been used successfully in archeology to determine the age of ancient artifacts or fossils as well as in a variety of other fields. The principle underlying the use of carbon dating is that carbon is a part of all living things on Earth. Since a radioactive substance such as carbon-14 has a known half-life, the amount of carbon-14 remaining in an object can be used to date that object.
Carbon-14 has a half-life of 5.570 years, which means that after that number of years, half of the carbon-14 atoms have decayed into nitrogen-14. It is the ratio of carbon-14 in that substance that indicates the age of the substance. If, for example, in a particular sample the amount of carbon-14 is roughly equivalent to the amount of nitrogen-14, this indicates that roughly half of the carbon-14 has decayed into nitrogen-14, and the sample is approximately 5.570 years old.
Carbon dating cannot be used effectively in dating objects that are older than 80,000 years. When objects are that old, much of the carbon-14 has already decayed into nitrogen-14, and the miniscule amount that
is left doesn’t provide a reliable measurement of age. In the case of older objects, other age-dating methods are available, methods which use radioactive atoms with longer half-lives than carbon has.

40. The passage is mainly about ______.

A) the differences between carbon-14 and nitrogen-14

B) various uses of carbon

C) archeology and the study of ancient artifacts

D) one method of dating old objects

41. The expression “is left” in paragraph 3 could best be replaced by ______.

A) remains

B) has disappeared

C) changes

D) is gone

42. Which of the following is NOT true about carbon-14?

A) It is radioactive.

B) Its half-life is more than 5,000 years.

C) It and nitrogen always exist in equal amounts in any substance.

D) It can decay into nitrogen-14.

43. It can be inferred from the passage that if an item contains more carbon-14 than nitrogen-14, then the item

is ______.

A) too old to be age-dated with carbon-14

B) not as much as 5.570 years old

C) too radioactive to be used by archeologists

D) more than 5.570 years old

Questions 44-47

Read the following text and on your optic form, mark the alternative (A, B, C or D) which best completes the statements or answers the questions. (4x1.5=6 marks)

THE MYTH OF THE ONLY CHILD

According to a recent report, only children are spoilt and generally more selfish. They find it difficult to get on with others. The number of families with only one child is growing and the report warns that a child without brothers and sisters will have ‘greater social isolation with teenagers who have a more selfish attitude to life.’

Isn’t it time to stop believing all these negative myths? Why do we believe that only children are aggressive and bossy? Professor of Psychiatry, Sarah Wood, comments, ‘I have not seen any difference between the social skills of only children and those with siblings.’ She believes, in fact, that only children quickly learn that they may get away with being bossy at home, but it isn’t a good way to make friends out. She says that without siblings, only children will generally try harder to be popular among friends and can be extremely sociable.

Another myth is the stereotype of the lonely only child with their head always in a book. Only children may prefer more non-competitive, solitary activities, but it is not because they are always alone. In fact, an interest in reading, stamp collecting and so on will probably depend on how their families bring them up. Middle and upper middle class families are both more likely to have a single child, and more likely to encourage a love of reading. And, far from being more dependent on their parents, only children seem to decide things by themselves.

Surely, there is no recipe for a happy child. What works for some won’t necessarily work for others-it is all about what parents can do to make their child secure. If a couple does not have the time or money for more than one child, or simply does not want more than one, isn’t it better to have just one happy child rather than an unhappy large family?

Charlotte Harris, 17 and an only child, says ‘Mum says that she is sorry for me because she has not given me a brother or sister, but I think she feels much worse about it than I do. It really has never been that important to me. I think, if you have good parents, then you will be just fine.’

44) Professor Sarah Wood believes that _____.

A) only children are aggressive and bossy

B) only children are not good at making friends

C) only children and children with siblings have the samesocial skills

D) children with siblings are more sociable than only children

45) Only children may enjoy reading because_____.

A) it helps them to be more dependent

B) they do not have any brothers or sisters to play with

C) they find it hard to talk to people

D) their parents have taught them to enjoy it
