In Writing, students continued researching Great White Sharks, Crocodiles, and Praying Mantises for their informative book on the deadliest predators. Students are looking at multiple sources including, books, magazines and websites.
In Reading, students learned about folk art and identified reasons for why the author included folk art in Tonight is Carnaval. Students made connections between folk art and Tonight is Carnaval.
Students went to P.E. today.
In Math, students continued subtracting numbers within 1000. Students learned how to adjust numbers in the problem to make it easier to subtract.
Example: 521-116=
521-(116+5)=
521-121=400
400+5=405
In Social Studies, students watched a video on how local government officials make laws. Students identified how government officials know what laws are needed in the community. We discussed ways the county council and county executive protect citizens and maintain order. Students created a problem scenario in their community and are working together to describe how they would create a law to help solve their problem. Students will continue to work on this tomorrow.

In Writing, students continued researching Great White Sharks, Crocodiles, and Praying Mantises for their informative book on the deadliest predators. Students are looking at multiple sources including, books, magazines and websites.
In Reading, students read Tonight is Carnaval. Students identified details in the story. We sorted them into two categories, supporting details and key details. Students identified the message of the story from the key details they identified.
Students went to Music today.
In Math, students continued subtracting numbers within 1000. Students learned how to use rounding to help solve subtraction problems.
Example: 518-379=
379+21=400 ->We rounded 379 to the nearest hundred
518-400=118
118+21=139 ->Since we took away 21 more when we rounded, we need to add back 21.
In Science, we discussed what we learned about gravity from our experiment yesterday. Students conducted another experiment today. They investigated how changing the characteristics of an object affects its motion. Students dropped a crumpled piece of paper and a normal piece of paper at the same time and height. Students concluded that the crumpled paper dropped faster than the normal piece of paper because it is more dense and the air is able to move around it, unlike the normal piece of paper where the air forces upwards and slows the paper down. They used this information to help them explain the results from their experiment yesterday. They concluded that even though gravity always forces objects downwards, the air sometimes pushes upwards on objects which is why some objects fall slower.

Class Updates
In Writing, students finished up their Free to Be Me personal narratives. Students were introduced to their next writing project. Students will be writing an informative book on the computer about the deadliest predators.
In Reading, students read a National Geographic article on deserts. Students answered questions and cited evidence to support their answer.
During Computers, students began researching Great White Sharks, Crocodiles and Praying Mantises for their writing project on the deadliest predators.
In Math, students began subtracting numbers within 1000. Students learned a new method that involved changing a subtraction problem into an addition problem with an unknown.
Example: 235-178=x
x+178=235
178+20=198
198+2=200
200+35=235
x=20+2+35
x=57
In Science, students discussed what they already know about gravity. They conducted an experiment to see how gravity affects the motion of a ball, feather, cube and piece of paper. Students noticed that lighter objects took the longest to fall when they were dropped. Heavier objects fell the fastest. Students discussed reasons for these results.

In Writing, students continued working on their "Free to Be...Me" narrative. Students had an author's chair at the end of writing to share what they have been working to get feedback from their classmates.
In Reading, students had a discussion on "Ooka and the Honest Thief". Students discussed why Ooka wanted Gonta to put back more rice than he stole. Students had to find evidence from the story to support their answer. I was so impressed with their discussion. They had wonderful examples in the text to support their opinions.
Students went to the Media Center today.
In Math, students began subtracting numbers within 1000. We identified whether we would needed to decompose a ten or a hundred before we began solving the problem.
In Social Studies, students learned about the three branches of government: Executive Branch, Legislative Branch and Judicial Branch. Students identified what each of the branches does.

In Writing, we made a list of all the words we used in our writing with apostrophes. Students then identified the two purposes for an apostrophe. Students continued writing their "Free to Be...Me" narrative.
In Reading, students prepared for their discussion tomorrow on "Ooka and the Honest Thief". Students will be discussing why Ooka wanted Gonta to put back more rice than he stole. Students had to find evidence from the story to support their answer.
Students went to Art today.
In Math, students took an assessment on Arrow Math. Students added three addends within 1000.
In Social Studies, students defined common good. They learned about the role of the county executive. They identified the roles of the five departments in Montgomery County (Department of Transportation, Recreation, Economic Development, Housing and Community Affairs, and Health and Human Services).

In Writing, we discussed resources to use in Writing when you do not know how to spell a word. Students continued working on their "Free to Be...Me" narratives.
In Reading, we discussed Ooka's note to Gonta, "You owe an extra ten percent for interest". We discussed the meaning of this quote and used evidence from the story to support our answers.
Students went to P.E. today.
In Math, continued using multiple methods for adding within 1000. We discussed which method was most efficient to use for different problems.
In Science, students conducted their first science investigation. Students had to investigate how texture affects the movement of a ball. Students used a cardboard ramp and covered it with either aluminum foil, wax paper, felt or sand paper. Students measured the distance the ball traveled and the time it took to go down the ramp. Students compared the data collected from the cardboard ramp to the covered ramp to determine how it affected the ball.

Class Updates
In Writing, students began began writing their rough draft for their next personal narrative, "Free to Be...Me". In this narrative, students have to describe their personality.
In Reading, students re-read the Junior Great Books story "Ooka and the Honest Thief". We discussed the meaning of "honest thief". We used evidence from the text to support why Gonta was a honest thief.
Students went to Music today.
In Math, students took an assessment on rounding. Students worked in groups to solve 154+247. Each group had to solve it using a different method. We discussed which method is the most efficient for solving addition and why.
In Science, students had to use four unifix cubes, an index card and a ball to change the ball's direction, speed and make it stop. We then made predictions for which surfaces outside would make the ball go the straightest, fastest, slowest, furthest and shortest. We went outside to test to see if our predictions were correct. Students noticed that the black top and sidewalk made the ball go the fastest and furthest because they are smoother. The gravel, grass and mulch made the ball go the slowest and shortest because they are rough and slow the ball down.
