This day-long, practical workshop will focus on the Unified English Braille (UEB) code, which will be implemented in the United States on January 4, 2016. An explanation of the changes between UEB and the current code will be provided and discussed. Participants need to bring a Perkins Brailler so they can practice the new UEB code with discussion to follow. Sample documents transcribed in UEB will also be reviewed.

Dr. Frances Mary D’Andrea is the coauthor of Ashcroft’s Programmed Instruction: Unified English Braille, as well as numerous textbooks, articles, and professional materials related to braille and literacy instruction for individuals who are blind or have low vision. Her renowned contributions to the field include an abundance of research and publications. Through her international experience and her involvement with the Braille Authority of North America (BANA) she is a prominent figure in the implementation of UEB in the USA.

LOCATION: The seminar will be held in the Leona and Harry B. Helmsley Conference Center on the campus of the Helen Keller National Center, a beautiful 25 acre facility in Sands Point, Long Island, NY. The Center is convenient to most NYC area airports. Housing is available on campus on a first come-first served basis.

REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS: This course is for professionals who teach braille, read braille, or work with braille readers and is appropriate for anyone who is knowledgeable in contracted literary braille. A Perkins Brailler is necessary for participation in this workshop. If you are unable to bring a Perkins Brailler, please contact us at 516-833-8304 to reserve one in advance (limited number available).

COURSE STRUCTURE: This is a 6 hour seminar and participation in the entire workshop is required to earn CEUs and a Certificate of Participation. This workshop will provide information regarding the changes to UEB and the rationale for these changes, handouts, cheat sheets, rulebooks, and approximately 4 hours hands-on practice on a Perkins Brailler (participants should plan to bring their own. A limited number are available on a first come-first served basis).

COST: $100 — Includes on-site training, handouts, cheat sheets, rulebook, UEB samples, reference lists with practice sentences, and valuable hands-on experience led by Frances Mary D’Andrea, Ph.D. In addition, lunch will be provided at the Helen Keller National Center. Lodging is available on campus at an additional cost of $100 per day on a first come-first served basis, with reservations made in advance. All rooms are double occupancy.
