YOUTH MUSIC MENTORS PROJECT DETAILS
Youth Music Mentors aims to improve the life chances of young people through music-based mentoring. Building on successful work already carried out by Youth Music over the last few years, we are seeking to further develop this programme, reaching even more disadvantaged young people through a unique combination of music and mentoring support.
The Project has been developed on the back of an evaluation of previous work which can be found here:
Youth Music Mentors provides young people who need additional support the opportunity to achieve musical, educational and social outcomes, with support from a trained (adult) mentor.
Youth Music will be at the heart of the Youth Music Mentors programme, delivering;
- Training for music makers, leaders of music projects and potential mentors in emotional intelligence, mentoring skills and appropriate support mechanisms
- Development of two training packages and associated resources for Music leaders / practitioners on how to undertake music-based mentoring and mangers and leaders of organisations looking to embed music based mentoring into their work
- Promotion of Music Mentoring to leaders of music-making projects and music practitioners.
- Delivery of one-day training sessions for music-based mentors based around the UK, focusing on emotional intelligence and core mentoring skills (“What is Mentoring?”).
- Delivery of short training sessions for leaders of music making projects, who would have music-based mentors within their staff (“10 things to have in a mentor-supporting organisation”).
- Online and offline resources, including a community of interest and support networks for mentors
- Development and maintenance of supportive materials for both Mentors and their managers/supervisors through
- Youth Music Network(message boards, written case studies, signposting to other relevant sources).
- Hard copy (and online available) handbook for Mentors and managers to refer to on an on-going basis.
- On-going refinement, development and evaluation of the programme
- Collation, and dissemination, of on-going feedback from music-based mentoring practitioners to Youth Music.
- Annual project evaluation including details of impact of Music Mentoring on young people/projects.
- A range of support from external parties to mentors and those involved in the programme
- Management and coordination of coaches for individual mentors to support their work with young people.
- Contributions to Youth Music Network or specific mentor communications around key issues for mentors (tips, advice etc).
- Ad hoc support sessions/surgeries for mentors.
- Annual event to provide support, advice and offer opportunity for collective development.
- Funded mentor placements in high quality music-making organisations
- Mentor placements in music-making organisations in England funded through Youth Music Modular Grants process with funds from the Arts Council England, and from private sector donors.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME - OUTLINE
A central element of this programme is the design and development oftraining courses for music leaders, musicians and organisations who work with young people to embed music-based mentoring into their work; and to explore opportunities to align these training products with external accreditation or qualification frameworks.
Building on the knowledge already in place, and previous training materials developed as well as evaluation and feedback from key stakeholders, Youth Music is now seeking to develop two new and improved training packages with the following aims:
-To build on and share experiences of the benefits of music based mentoring with more music leaders and music making organisations across the whole of Great Britain
-To enable more young people, especially those who face a range of challenging circumstances to access high quality music based mentoring provision.
-To develop a sustainable model of training that Youth Music can seek, in the medium to long term to develop into a commercially viable income generation package which furthers the organisations’ charitable objectives.
SUGGESTED METHODOLOGY
Applicants are invited to suggest their own model of working, however we would hope to see the following areas included in the proposal put forward:
- A short review of existing materials and audit of previous Youth Music Mentors training, including reviewing evidence of the efficacy of training approaches from existing evaluation material
- Consulting with appropriate internal and external stakeholders to establish suggested approaches to training ‘packages’
- Designing an approach to training aimed at a range of audiences
- Designing an evaluation framework to establish the efficacy of training
SUGGESTED OUTPUTS
1. Training
- Two, discrete, one-day training packages and associated resourcescompleted on the following areas:
- Music leaders / practitioners on how to undertake music-based mentoring
- Mangers and leaders of organisations looking to embed music based mentoring into their work
- Training programme and associated resources to enable Youth Music to train facilitators to deliver the completed training on Youth Music’s behalf[1].
- Evaluation and Refinement
- Robust evaluation on the delivery and effectiveness of training events
- Updated materials and training resources (if further development required).
3. Business Development
- Completed research paper into the opportunities to align the developed training packages with existing qualifications or accreditations (taking external advice where appropriate), including fully costed recommendations as to how to make this happen.

APPLICANT SPECIFIATION
Youth Music is looking for an individual, or group of people who should have a mix of the following attributes, experience and skills:
- Experience of developing and ‘marketing’training products
- Experience of facilitating group training and development sessions
- Broad understanding of operational delivery and training development
- Understanding of the wider music education sector
- Excellent verbal and written communication (including command of grammar), able to articulate complex issues clearly and succinctly
- Understanding of the issues facing disadvantaged young people
- Experience of delivering Music Based Mentoring or training in this area
BUDGET
Indicative budget of £8,500 including VAT and associated costs.
APPLICATION DETAILS
Applicants are asked to prepare a short proposal of how they would undertake the work detailed above, including a brief timetable of activity and associated costs. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview for the work.
Youth Music is offering this opportunity as a commissioned piece of work. If you are interested in tendering for the work please prepare a written proposal including:
- Cover letter with contact details for 2 referees
- Suggested approach to undertaking the project including methodology
- A proposed timetable
- A CV and budget analysis for each individual involved in the work, including their cost per day and the proposed number of days spent on the project
- A budget for the project, plus an estimate of travel costs and expenses
- The total cost of the proposal

The deadline for submitting a response is 18th April2012 at 5pm with interviews on 25th April 2012. Please submit an electronic (email) or hard copy of your proposal by the deadline. The selected researcher(s) will be expected to present their proposal at interview. It is hoped that work will begin in May 2012.
