PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR HARLAN ELEMENTARY TEACHERS

TO: Elementary Teachers

FROM: James Greene

DATE: May 8, 2015

Professional development for 2015-16 will be an extension of the training begun this year and will include additional training in assessment for learning and additional curriculum development work.

In this year’s calendar, there are only four days designated for professional development as one of the two days eliminated from the calendar was a PD day. This means teachers must earn a total of 24 hours as part of their contract.

Twelve hours of training will be scheduled on fixed dates in the calendar; everyone will be expected to attend on those ‘mandated’ days which are:

Tuesday, September 8 Tentative topic: world languages/global competency

Tuesday, November 3 Tentative topics: developing learning packets for Dragon Days and one other

The remaining twelve hours will be scheduled flexibly. The two calendar days that will represent the flexible hours are August 4 and February 15. To be off on August 4, you must have earned six hours of flexible credit by that date; to be off on February 15, you must have earned twelve hours of flexible credit by that date. (The February 15 date could shift to later in the year if we have a weather issue as we did this year.)

Options for earning flexible hours this summer (all are six hour workshops unless otherwise noted):

All HES teachers are expected to attend:

HarIanInd16_201 Literacy Project Cooperative Learning Training. July 17. Kristy Stuber, Southeast/South Central Cooperative.

Additional options:

HarIanInd16_101 and Harlanind16_102 Dataseam Technology Training. June 22-23 (6 hours plus a computer) Mr. Shope. Prior approval required. You need to register separately for each day due to how CIITS handles data.

HarIanInd16_103. Trauma Informed Teachers. July 20. Melinda Hornback. This training explores the ways various forms of trauma (e.g. drug abuse, dysfunctional families, homelessness) impact students as well as connections between effects of trauma and other sensory disorders including autism.

HarIanInd16_104. Total Participation Techniques. July 28. Melissa Bates. Total Participation Techniques are teaching practices that promote active student involvement and engagement with learning and can be adapted to fit almost any learning situation.

The options above require no further permission, and you may register directly in CIITS:

These Southeast/South Central Cooperative options involve a fee and require the principal to sign off so that a purchase order can be generated prior to registration. We will send you an e-mail authorizing you to register. We will pay the registration fee but not travel for these workshops. Most will be in London or Corbin. Please complete a Flexible PD Request form and have Mrs. Anderson sign it. You must register in CIITS.
