Unofficial Advising

Though it may not have been specifically designated as part of my teaching assignments, a common thread at each of the schools at which I taught full time or as a visitor was that I was the only African American, and often the only minority, in the Theatre Department. As such, I became de facto advisor and mentor to African American students in particular, and most minority students. Having attended undergraduate and graduate programs in which there was a similar situation for me, I felt deeply that this was a necessary focus of my teaching, and it was definitely much needed and appreciated by those students who sought my help and advice.
