Craft Safety Ambassadors

  • 100% dedicated craft safety personnel
  • Currently nine CSA’s with one in the pipe
  • We will have a minimum of 2 per building/area/shift (total 10)
  • Slowly building out the program
  • More will be assigned to the buildings that feel they can take them on
  • Compiling a representative group from the major unions.
  • Main focus is to make safety personal:
  • “Louis Chapdelaine Touch”- talk to the craft about their families and make them realize why they must work safe. They are to sell that nothing we do here is worth getting hurt over.
  • Spread the message of “lowering tolerance for risk”. Share real life experiences.
  • Promote the SAZ Program (behavior observation feedback). 5 to 1 ratio of positive to negative feedback.
  • Help crews with hazard recognition using their experiences. Audit FLHA’s based on that experience.
  • Schedule:
  • First two-three rotations meet people and become comfortable with the new role
  • Next few rotations they will take part in their area/building’s incentive program.
  • Depending on the person, a few weeks after the incentive they will start participating in the KBAC Orientation by talking to new employees
  • Next they will take part in the Mass Meeting for their building/area
  • Trial period to insure the CSA enjoys the position and that we feel they are the correct fit.
  • CSA’s will have mentoring time in the field with the staff Safety Advisors to learn their main roles and responsibilities.
  • We will provide the following trainings:
  • Review of roles and responsibilities
  • Risk Tolerance
  • Behavior observation and feedback
  • Others as needed
  • CSA’s will not receive a computer, phone, radio, camera or desk.
  • They will observe all trades in their area not just the one they are tied to.
  • 95-100% of their time will be spent in the field.
  • They are assigned to an area/building and report to the Safety Lead.
  • Bi-Monthly meeting with Chris, Matt and CSA’s to identify challenges and successes.

Current Successes

  • Overcoming the “rat program” stigma quickly
  • RDTC (Resource Development Trades Council) supports the program
  • Large number of people wanting to become CSA’s
  • Building Managers starting to see them as their eyes and ears to the craft and are 100% engaged with them

Current Challenges

  • Craft initially very skeptical of them but CSA’s quickly overcome the pushback.
  • Time consuming initially for the area safety staff to onboard the CSA’s
  • Need to limit the “flavor of the days” to a minimum. Keep the consistency among CSA’s similar.
