Pro Bono Coordinator – Community Based Talk to a Lawyer and Homeless Advocacy Programs– Part time

Position Description

The mission of the Volunteer Lawyers Project of Onondaga County, Inc. (OnVLP) is to provide access to justice through engaging the legal community in volunteer service to those in need. OnVLP collaborates with local legal and social service providers in the area to identify and address unmet needs. The office receives funding form a variety of public and private sources and enjoys strong support from local bar associations throughout Central New York.

OnVLP seeks a part time Pro Bono Coordinator (PT PBC) to coordinate our community based Talk to a Lawyers and Homeless Advocacy Programs. With these programs, OnVLP runs 30 free legal clinics every month at community-based locations (including libraries, community centers, schools, and emergency shelters). At the clinics, pro bono attorneys provide free legal information, advice and counsel to anyone what walks in. These clinics serve as outreach, making legal advice easily accessible throughout the community, and help to raise the legal literacy of the community.

This position requires developing and maintaining strong relationships throughout the community. The PT PBC will primarily be responsible for coordinating volunteers to staff all of these clinics, scheduling appropriate trainings for the volunteers and community, and completing administrative work associated with the program. The PT PBC will maintain case files and other organizational systems, draft correspondence, contact volunteers, contact clients, provide general administrative support to attorneys, and assist with responding to clients. The pro bono coordinator will maintain accurate records of attorney participation in pro bono programming for reporting. Significant interaction with volunteer attorneys and with clients will be required.

Qualifications:Experience with organizing or volunteer coordination required. Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income communities required.Excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills. Motivated, detail-oriented, well-organized, self-starting, dependable, able to work well under pressure, a team player, computer-literate. A high level of fluency and comfort with Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat and database/case management systems required. Ability to handle intake calls, often from people facing crises or significant problems, is critical; thus any experience with hotlines is also helpful. Fluency in Spanish or another second language is preferred.
